Generator Associates has been in business for some years and sells the following brands of generators: Yamaha, Briggs & Stratton, Yanmar, Lovol, Volvo Penta, Perkins and Iveco. The bigger generators are assembled by C&R Industries in Durban for sale by Generator Associates.
The Johannesburg based company is slowly growing its big generator business. All of the brands sold by Generator Associates have a good reputation for local African conditions and are well supported by the manufacturers’ local agents. The available outputs range from less than 1 kVA up to 2500 kVA as can be seen on their website www.sagenerator.co.za. The bigger generator sets, from about 20 kVA upwards are assembled to order and there can be a lead time of up to 10 weeks for a large synchronised set with a 3CR12 stainless steel canopy.
According to Dean from Generator Associates, many customers want an “all-in-one” service. This includes assistance in determining their requirements, advice on the best solutions, delivery installation and commissioning. He adds that generator sales depend significantly on whether the national utility (Eskom in the case of South Africa) has surplus capacity or, as is the case presently, is shedding loads to maintain the integrity of the national grid.
Dean advises that the potential buyers of big generator sets should use their local electricians to establish their power requirements before shopping around for generators.
Generator Associates operates over a large area and uses associated installation electricians and maintenance technicians for the generator sets they supply. Spare parts are only provided for the models supplied by the company.
A recent project involved the supply of 100 kVA Perkins for a new office block in South Africa. Although the company has not exported many units, it has export authorisation from the South African tax authorities.
Generator Associates offers petrol air-cooled single phase and 3-phase generators (Yamaha, Briggs & Stratton) as well as some small Yanmar air-cooled diesels. The bigger water-cooled 3-phase generator sets offered are Yanmar, Lovol, Volvo Penta, Perkins and Iveco. Automatic mains failure and transfer switching systems and 3CR12 Stainless Steel weather proof and sound attenuation canopies are available as optional extras.
