KickStart International is an award-winning, non-profit social enterprise with a mission to lift millions of people in Africa out of poverty quickly, cost-effectively, and sustainably. We do this by designing and mass-marketing durable yet affordable MoneyMaker branded irrigation pumps.
These low-cost ($70 and $150) pumps are purchased by very poor farmers who use them to irrigate their land, enabling them to move from rain-fed subsistence farming to year-round commercial irrigated agriculture.
KickStart farmers increase their annual farming income through irrigation from $150 to $850 – almost a 500% increase. Additionally, they increased their total net-annual farm income by over 400%. For the first time, they can properly feed and educate their children, afford healthcare and plan for their futures. KickStart uses donor funds to design the technologies, establish the private-sector supply chains, educate farmers about the benefits and methods of irrigation to promote the pumps, and closely monitor their impacts. KickStart’s model for development empowers people and provides them the opportunity they deserve to create a better life for themselves and their families.
Their MoneyMaker branded irrigation pumps are designed in Kenya and sold across sub- Saharan Africa. They have appointed and branded over 400 local retail shops in Kenya, Zambia and Tanzania that sell pumps and spare parts directly to dealers or smallholder farmers. They also have 25 appointed importers and distributors across 19 other countries in Africa who import pumps and on-sell them to local NGOs and farmers.
KickStart International offers two irrigation pumps – MoneyMaker Max and MoneyMaker Hip pump and they are affordable, durable and a low cost capital investment for poor entrepreneurs in Africa. Each pump is able to increase farm income by up to 10 times and the farm produce increases up to three or four times in a year. The MoneyMaker pumps are human powered and allow small-scale farmers to access water, which enables them to increase their crop yield and on average increase their income from irrigation by about 500%.
