The General Zone Hospital (HGZ) with 72 beds will be constructed in Guanajuato to replace the Hospital Sub-Zone General Hospital (HGSZ) No. 10. The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) also approved the executive project for the 260-bed Regional General Hospital (HGR) in Santa Catarina, Nuevo Leon, through its Technical Council.

Additionally, the councillors approved the donation of the rustic Penjamo property to the Municipal Council of Acala, Chiapas, during the ordinary session. The 3000 square meter property will be used to build a Family Medicine Unit (FMU). It will also have two medical offices, a family medicine specialist, and a nurse.

The IMSS preventive framework is being implemented simultaneously with the growth of the institute’s medical infrastructure. This was emphasized by Zoe Robledo, general director of IMSS. Additionally, efforts are being made to improve the efficiency of spaces and medical facilities. This aims to allow more offices to be open on weekends and operating rooms to be utilized sooner.

Medical Infrastructure Development Across Mexico

According to him, the institute is currently working on 11 concurrent hospital projects across the country. Some of these projects aim to restore losses from the 2017 earthquake. Examples of these projects include the HGZ infrastructure and hospitals in San Alejandro, Puebla, and also in Zaragoza, Mexico City. In 2021, the Tula River overflow had an impact on less than five Tula hospitals.

In addition to the hospital in Cardenas, that is handled by the state government, and in Uruapan, Michoacan, there are more IMSS projects in Ticul, Yucatan, City Juarez, Chihuahua, Baja California, Ensenada, Navojoa, Tuxtla Gutierrez, Sonora, Chiapas, and Tlahuac, Mexico City.

He emphasized that training specialized doctors is another investment. He noted that out of the more than 47,500 doctors who submitted their applications for medical residency programs, 9,500 will go on to conclude their IMSS residency.

What the new General Zone Hospital will feature

The work that will replace HGSZ No. 10 of Guanajuato was revealed by the director of administration, Borsalino González Andrade. It includes new areas like outpatient dialysis, anatomy, pathology, tocosurgery, and others. This is due to alterations to the architectural design. The adaptations are aimed at satisfying the criteria of accessibility to the services. They are implemented as part of the construction of this type of project.

He said that there would be a total of 72 beds, of which eight will be for paediatrics, twelve for gynaecology, twenty seven for general surgery, and twenty five for internal medicine. A piece of land measuring 21,453 square meters was identified, and the assigned population is desired. 200 thousand people could benefit from this project. The initiative aims to improve the Second Level services’ equity, quality, and accessibility.
