Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has stated that it has laid out plans with the counties to kick off KPLC Energy Distribution Project to industrial parks that will be constructed in the counties. Currently, the utility firm is participating in the devolved units in order to map out their potential energy needs. This step is going to enable it put up the required and appropriate infrastructure more so with the implementation of the County Aggregation and Industrial Park in all the counties in Kenya.

This KPLC Energy Distribution Project aims to expand the power supply by increasing distribution is aimed mainly at improving the economy of the country and improve the livelihoods of the citizens through job and income generation.

Counties that KPLC Energy Distribution Project has Commenced

Tharaka Nithi County is the only county that as allocated land for this project by KPLC. It has set aside a three-acre piece of land for the company to utilize in stabilizing its power supply in the county. The land will be utilized in setting up a 15MVA, 132/33kv sub-station which will enable the strengthening of quality supply within the vicinity of the county. According to the governor of the county, Muthomi Njuki, the establishment of the sub-station is going to enable the setting up of a dedicated power line that will provide services to Kathwana, which contains the headquarters of the county and also the areas surrounding it.

In a statement issued by the managing director of Kenya Power and Lighting Company, Joseph Siror, pointed out that the company is already involving itself in engagements with the respective county governments to map out their power needs. This requisite data that will be acquired will enable the company incorporate the energy needs of the counties in a good and strategic plan in order to implement the KPLC Energy Distribution Project.
