Morocco’s OCP, a key player in the chemical and fertilizers industry, is taking substantial strides towards environmental sustainability by announcing a $7 billion investment in a state-of-the-art ammonia plant. This project focuses on utilizing green hydrogen derived from renewable fuels to enhance production efficiency and achieve remarkably low carbon emissions.
Morocco’s Renewable Energy Goals and Ambitious Targets
OCP, as a state-owned company, plays a pivotal role in fortifying Morocco’s position as a prominent exporter of fertilizers.
As part of its long-term strategy, OCP has set its sights on bolstering the local supply chain by establishing a facility in Tarfaya, located in southern Morocco. This facility aims to leverage solar and wind power through electrolysis to generate hydrogen, which will serve as a crucial feedstock for ammonia production. Furthermore, OCP’s $13 billion strategy, unveiled in December, explicitly outlines the company’s firm commitment to renewable and environmentally friendly energy solutions.
Morocco, as a nation, is resolutely committed to renewable energies, as evidenced by its government’s ambitious plans. The country aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its total installed power capacity from 38% to 52% by 2030. Furthermore, Morocco seeks to dedicate 70% of its energy mix to renewables by 2040, eventually reaching an impressive 80% by 2050. Morocco’s advantageous geographical features, such as abundant sunlight, strong winds in specific regions, and an extensive coastline, make it an ideal hub for renewable energy development.
In addition to its renewable energy initiatives, Morocco is proactively addressing its water management challenges. The nation plans to alleviate the severe impacts of its prolonged drought by increasing desalination capacity. By 2027, OCP intends to use only desalinated water for its industrial activities. As part of the broader project in Tarfaya, a renewable energy-powered desalination plant with an annual capacity of 60 million cubic meters will serve industrial complexes, ensuring sustainable water resources.
