Groundwater wells are at the forefront of a remarkable endeavor set to revolutionize the region’s water supply. A substantial sum of RM1.5 million has been earmarked for the Groundwater Production Well Development and Pressurisation System Pilot Project at the Gunung Semanggol Water Treatment Plant in Kerian. Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, Chairman of Perak’s Infrastructure, Energy, Water, and Public Transport Committee announced this groundbreaking development.

In September 2022, the construction of two exceptional wells commenced. Each well delves over 100 meters into the earth, with a daily capacity of 2.5 million liters. Ultimately, this impressive project reached completion in March 2023.

Unlocking the Potential: The RM1.5 Million Groundwater Wells Initiative

This ambitious venture resulted from the collaborative efforts of the Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Ministry, along with the Department of Minerals and Geoscience. The Perak Water Board made a substantial contribution, playing a vital role in the water treatment process.

The Department of Minerals and Geoscience conducted comprehensive studies, including geological and hydrogeological mapping, and geophysical tests. Nizar revealed this during the official ceremony in Bagan Serai today. As part of the 11th Malaysia Plan, the project received an allocation of RM33 million, spanning 19 innovative plants nationwide. The exhaustive analysis carried out as part of this initiative unearthed an astonishing 106.1 million liters of water available for daily consumption. This means that groundwater development holds a treasure trove of potential, ensuring a more secure water supply for the community.

These wells serve as a dependable alternative source of water, especially for the regions of Kerian, Larut Matang, and Selama. They provide a much-needed solution to fortify the existing water sources from rivers and address supply challenges in the area, particularly during weather phenomena like El Nino.

In essence, the RM1.5 million investment in the Groundwater Wells Project signifies a groundbreaking achievement. This project is not just about providing water; it’s about securing a future where water supply issues become a thing of the past. This initiative will change the game for the community and bring about a brighter and more sustainable future.
