The Houston Methodist Hospital expansion project which broke ground in December 2021 has completed two buildings in Sugar Land, Texas. According to the general contractor, McCarthy, the project was completed with an aggressive timeline and several challenges along the way. However, the company said it stayed focused on its goal to provide a seamless experience on this complex hospital project.

McCarthy faced multiple challenges due to the Houston Methodist Hospital project’s location which took place within the operating campus. As a result, the construction firm had to work within a confined area without disrupting sensitive hospital operations. McCarthy also made use of BIM-coordinated MEP system and mapping technologies to identify the locations of underground utilities.

Another challenge McCarthy faced was the extension of a water main 2,500 feet around the campus. This was a major logistical issue and the construction firm had to navigate through existing underground utilities to finish it.

McCarthy solved some of the challenges in the Houston Methodist Hospital expansion project with timed deliveries. They ensured materials were installed as soon as possible to accommodate limited laydown space. Additionally, McCarthy was able to manage issues associated with the supply chain to ensure materials arrived on time. This helped to prevent disruptions to the project’s schedule. Featured amenities for the Houston Methodist Hospital expansion project

The Houston Methodist Hospital expansion included a 160,000-square-foot medical office building and a garage, with 1,100 spaces. The new six-storey medical office building connects to other existing campus buildings through conditioned pedestrian bridges. In addition, the new garage structure also has a vehicle bridge that connects it to an existing adjacent garage.

The medical office building for Houston Methodist Hospital expansion features spacious corridors, a lobby and an endoscopy surgical centre. The surgical centre will have three endoscopy rooms as well as one operating room. However, the surgical centre is still under construction and the developer expects it to reach completion by August.
