Sports Illustrated is making its mark in the luxury hospitality sector as it ventures into resorts and hotels. In a joint announcement this week, Sports Hospitality Ventures (SHV) and Lagoon Development Company unveiled their collaborative plans for the Sports Illustrated Resort at Lago Mar in Texas City, TX.
Lago Mar is a master-planned community spanning 2,033 acres and featuring a captivating 12 acre lagoon. This man made beach amenity is open, to the public offering a getaway experience. Exciting news reveals that the Sports Illustrated Resort, at Lago Mar will soon grace the area with its presence. The resort will boast a nine story building housing 200 rooms some of which will offer views of the 24 million gallon lagoon, according to a news release.
“This collaboration combines the enthusiasm of sports with the hospitality of Texas, establishing a sanctuary in the heart of the Lone Star State ” stated Uri Man, the founder and CEO of Lagoon Development according to the press release.

Christopher Schroeder, CEO of Sports Hospitality Ventures expressed excitement, about Sports Illustrated Resort at Lago Mar in Texas City venture stating, “We are thrilled to embark on this endeavor. Texas sports hold importance within this state, Houston sports. It brings us pleasure to bring this resort to such a fan base.”
The hotel will have a variety of room sizes including suites that offer views of the 24 million gallon lagoon, which Lagoon Development claims to be the largest in Texas. Guests can enjoy watching games at the hotels Stadium Sports Grill or relax at the beach club complete with cabanas and a swim up island bar.
In a statement Rick Coleman, the founder and CEO of American Resort Management based in Grand Prairie expressed his pride, in offering luxury resort management services for this property.
The resort, which will be one of the first ever under the Sports Illustrated brand, aims to serve both traveling sports professionals and fans by offering spacious accommodations and suites. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy watching games and sporting events at the hotels Stadium Sports Grill or relax by the poolside at the Sports Illustrated Beach Club complete with cabanas and a swim up island bar.

Construction on Sports Illustrated Resort at Lago Mar in Texas City
Construction on the Sports Illustrated Resort, at Lago Mar is set to commence in the quarter of 2024 accompanied by a ceremonial groundbreaking event. The overall cost of this large scale project is yet to be determined. The hotel itself is expected to welcome guests either in 2026 or early 2027.
Apart, from the Sports Illustrated Resort at Lago Mar in Texas City, there are reports of Sports Illustrated Resorts being developed. One is set to open in Orlando, Florida by 2024. There’s also talk of a resort in Tuscaloosa, Alabama the home of the University of Alabama expected to debut in 2025. This Tuscaloosa hotel will be the first, among Sports resort properties planned for college towns nationwide.

The project is currently, in its stages of design and is scheduled to be submitted for permitting by the city of Texas City later this year. American Resort Management in collaboration, with SI Resorts will oversee the management of the resort.
