With a capacity of 180 megawatts, the facility will be developed in phases at a cost of $140 million.
The first phase of the project will be the construction of a 30-megawatt facility at Bambi, Central District in South Unguja Region. This phase will be completed in 2024 according to the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Joseph Kilangi.
The subsequent phases will be implemented quickly reportedly because the current lack of reliable power suppresses demand and limits economic growth in Zanzibar.
Generation Capital Limited and Taifa Group will incorporate unconventional Battery Energy Storage Systems into later phases of the project. This will ensure a reliable and efficient energy supply during the twilight peak demand.
Significance of the first large-scale solar power plant in Zanzibar
Zanzibar currently acquires electricity through a 100-megawatt submarine cable from mainland Tanzania. Upon the completion of the first large-scale solar power plant in Zanzibar, the island will be on the road to be energy independent.
The project will provide access to inexpensive, clean, and reliable power infrastructure. Additionally, this will rapidly foster economic growth and the betterment of the quality of life for all citizens.
Additionally, the project will be contributing considerably to the decrease of greenhouse gas releases and the general development of Zanzibar. The integration of solar PV into Zanzibar’s energy blend supports the Blue Economy agenda enhancing energy security.
