The competition among countries to host the world’s tallest building has become very stiff. Thailand recently revealed its plans to construct the tallest building in the world in its capital Bangkok according to the country’s prime minister revealed. Recently construction on the world’s tallest building, Jeddah Tower resumed in Saudi Arabia. Joining the race, Brazil has also made an announcement to construct the world’s tallest building in the city center of Sorocaba city.

The plans of this extra ordinary project was revealed by the mayor of the city. Mayor Rodrigo Manga made an announcement of partnering with private investors to embark on this ambitious project.

Height of the Project 

This upcoming world’s tallest building is expected to boast a remarkable height of one kilometer. Furthermore, it is expected to have a total of 170 floors. “This ambitious project is expected to transform downtown Sorocaba. It will give it a new face as the area has foreseen a decline in its population over the past few decades,” statistics show.

This ambitious project gets its inspiration from the current tallest building in the world, the Burk Khalifa located in Dubai. Burj Khalifa has height of 828 meters and has a total of 163 floors. “Just to note, the tallest building in Brazil currently is the Yachthouse located in Balneario Camboriu; it had a height of 290 meters and contains a total of 81 floors,” as statistics in the country indicate.

Current Tallest Building in Sorocaba

However, at the moment, the tallest building in Sorocaba is the Icone Building which has a height of 141 metres and a total of 45 floors. This building is located outside the city center in the southern Jardim Faculdade neighbourhood. Currently, the downtown area contains only mid-rise buildings that do not exceed more than 30 stories.

According to the city’s mayor statement, “this ambitious extraordinary project is part of a bigger plan. A plan that foresees to rejuvenate the aging 370 years old city center.” Furthermore, this project is expected to attract approximately R$2 billion( $357 million) in the private investment sector with public support.

In order to enable the implementation of the mega project, the city has embarked on the revision of its existing master plan. The master plan revision will entail aside will removal of height restrictions of buildings in the area. Moreover, the municipality will also be offering tax incentives and also streamlined licensing that is expected to attract potential investors.

Unmentioned firms have reportedly shown interest in enabling this ambitious project to come to a reality. Also, an engineering company has done the feasibility studies for the master plan revision. Public hearing and opinions will be given room before the project is forwarded to the city Council.

Moreover, it’s quite interesting to also note a similar project was also promised at the previous Sao Paulo’s mayoral campaign by Pablo Marcal who finished 3rd in the mayoral race.

Significance of the Project

“This project in Brazil is a clear indication that the country wants to leave a mark in the global race of urban development. It will bring the country moreso the city of Sorocaba to the spotlight emerging as a top competitor in urban infrastructure development,” statistics indicate.

“Lasty, If this project indeed comes to a reality, this skyscraper in Sorocaba would dwarf the planned Senna Tower. Senna Tower was named after the Formula one driver, Ayrton Senna. It aims to become the tallest residential building in the world with a height of 509 metres.”
