The Maydan Mahzam offshore redevelopment is advancing after COOEC secured a massive Middle Eastern engineering contract. China’s CNOOC Engineering, operating as COOEC, recently won this lucrative offshore agreement. Specifically, the Tianjin-headquartered contractor successfully captured the EPIC2 package from QatarEnergy. Consequently, the firm will execute comprehensive engineering, procurement, construction, and installation activities.
This latest victory pushes COOEC’s cumulative Middle East contract value past $7 billion. Ultimately, this specific package drives the larger effort to modernize a mature Qatari oil asset. Another major project advancing is the Safaniya field onshore facilities project which Tecnimont and Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) have recently entered into a lucrative engineering, procurement and construction contract.
The joint venture is directly contributing to Saudi Aramco’s ambitious plans for the development of the world’s largest offshore oil field. Saudi Aramco had previously awarded this huge tender last year, which was divided into two separate packages.
Outlook on the Maydan Mahzam Offshore Redevelopment
Executing this offshore modernization requires laying over 100 kilometers of subsea pipelines. Furthermore, crews will install critical cables, umbilicals, and related offshore infrastructure. Just last month, QatarEnergy awarded another substantial package to PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation. That specific deal encompasses extensive offshore installations and commissioning across the field cluster. Although PTSC kept their exact contract value confidential, local media estimated it around $3 billion. Therefore, multiple global contractors are converging to revamp this historic oil field.
Field History and Redevelopment Blueprint
The aging Maydan Mahzam field lies approximately 110 kilometers northeast of mainland Qatar. It has actively produced oil since 1965, requiring significant modern upgrades today. QatarEnergy’s ambitious blueprint features drilling 45 brand new extraction wells across multiple Arab reservoirs. Additionally, developers will modify existing wellhead jackets and build at least one completely new platform. Upgraded pipelines and advanced subsea infrastructure will heavily support these renewed operations. Ultimately, these aggressive modernizations ensure the historic field continues producing efficiently for decades.
