Six-story patient tower to replace decades-old structure as part of broader healthcare investment.
Demolition work has commenced on the North Building at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center, marking a significant step forward in the hospital’s ongoing $270 million revitalization effort in Green Bay.
The removal of the building clears the way for construction of a new six-story inpatient tower that will substantially expand the hospital’s capacity and enhance access to specialized healthcare services across Northeast Wisconsin.
The North Building, which has been part of the St. Mary’s campus since 1958, most recently housed clinics and administrative functions. Over the past several months, contractors have been carrying out interior demolition and preparing the structure for full removal.
New Tower to Expand Critical Care Capacity
Plans for the replacement tower include more than 100 new patient rooms serving medical, surgical and intensive care patients. The project is expected to dramatically increase critical care capacity at the hospital, with intensive care unit beds rising from eight to 36.
The expansion will also add two cardiovascular operating rooms and a dedicated cardiac procedural room, strengthening the hospital’s ability to provide advanced cardiac care.
Hospital officials have said the investment is intended to address growing demand for higher-acuity healthcare services as the region’s population continues to grow and age.
Broader Campus Improvements Underway
Demolition at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center’s North Building to make way for the new tower represents one component of a wider transformation of the St. Mary’s campus.
Additional improvements include a new main hospital entrance, expanded parking facilities, upgraded security features, and renovated kitchen and dining areas designed to improve both patient and visitor experiences.
Hospital leaders emphasize that they have carefully planned construction activities to keep all patient services operational throughout the project.
The Green Bay redevelopment aligns with other hospital construction activity currently underway across the U.S., including Ascension Saint Thomas’ $148.5 million full-service hospital and health campus in Clarksville, Tennessee, which recently broke ground.
Focus on Sustainability and Reuse
As demolition progresses, HSHS is working to divert materials from landfills by repurposing and recycling building materials, medical equipment and furnishings removed from the North Building.
The hospital has donated items no longer needed to nonprofit organizations, including Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach and Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity. In earlier phases of the project, crews also crushed demolished concrete and reused it on-site for construction.
Completion Expected in 2028
Groundbreaking for the new inpatient tower is expected later this year, and construction will continue over the next several years.
HSHS is advancing the St. Mary’s redevelopment as part of its broader $270 million investment in Green Bay healthcare facilities. The system is directing most of the funding toward St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center, while it continues to develop renovation plans for St. Vincent Hospital.
HSHS expects to complete the overall revitalization program in 2028.
