Egypt data center plans are advancing with a major construction project targeting 200MW of capacity. The $1 billion facility will become Egypt’s first large-scale artificial intelligence data center. Moreover, the project will deploy Nvidia accelerated computing technology for advanced AI workloads. Egypt announced the development as it seeks stronger digital infrastructure and international technology partnerships.
The development will begin with a 20MW facility during its initial three-year phase. That first stage carries an estimated investment of $200 million. Furthermore, the project partners intend to expand capacity progressively until the facility reaches 200MW.
Egypt data center project targets phased construction
The Egypt data center project will form part of Egypt’s broader effort to establish regional digital infrastructure. The planned facility will provide high-performance computing capacity for artificial intelligence applications.
Vodafone Business, Elsewedy Electric and Cassava Technologies will develop the project through Africa Data Centers Egypt. Cassava Technologies serves as Nvidia’s main partner in Africa and will contribute data center expertise.
Additionally, the partnership will provide locally delivered GPU-as-a-Service capabilities. This approach will allow organizations to develop and operate AI applications while keeping data within Egypt.
The infrastructure will initially deliver 20MW over three years. However, developers plan to scale the capacity to 200MW as investment progresses.
Egypt data center strengthens sovereign computing infrastructure
The Egypt AI data center will also establish the country’s first sovereign AI data center. Consequently, the project could strengthen Egypt’s ability to host sensitive data locally.
The facility will leverage Nvidia accelerated computing technologies, according to Cassava Technologies. Nvidia GPUs support demanding AI workloads, including model training and advanced computational applications.
Meanwhile, Egypt expects the wider project to attract approximately $200 million in initial foreign direct investment. Total investment could reach $1 billion once the planned capacity becomes operational.
The project also carries employment potential for Egypt’s technology and infrastructure sectors. Government information indicates that the development could create up to 200 direct jobs and about 2,000 indirect jobs.
The development also reflects a wider African push to build energy-efficient infrastructure for AI and cloud computing. In Kenya, the $600 million Olkaria Data Center project uses geothermal power to support a planned 60MW hyperscale campus. The project demonstrates how renewable energy can support energy-intensive data center construction across Africa.
Energy infrastructure remains a critical construction consideration
However, the project faces an important infrastructure challenge as developers scale its computing capacity. AI data centers require significantly more electricity than conventional data centers.
Arab News reported that AI facilities can consume up to five times more power than traditional data centers. Egypt has also experienced electricity supply challenges in previous years.
Therefore, reliable power infrastructure will remain crucial to the project’s construction and long-term operation.
The development also arrives amid growing competition between American and Chinese technology interests across Egypt. Huawei reportedly expressed interest in building an Egyptian data center before US companies advanced a competing proposition.
Egyptian and Chinese leaders also agreed to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence and technology. However, they did not announce specific agreements during that engagement.
At the same time, Egypt wants international partnerships to strengthen its position as a regional data center hub. The government therefore sees digital infrastructure as an important component of its economic development strategy.
