Highway 101 Widening Project

The final phase of the $700 million Highway 101 widening project has commenced in Santa Barbara North Segment, California. Once complete, the Highway 101 is expected to add nearly 11 miles of continuous carpool lanes to facilitate transport. Highlights on the Santa Barbara North segment include a rebuilt Cabrillo Boulevard interchange featuring two new bridges. Moreover, it entails a teardrop roundabout to help improve car flow.

The new freeway lanes will use concrete designed to reduce noise in nearby neighborhoods. Drivers will first notice the permanent closure of the southbound off-ramp at Los Patos Way. Conversely, it will be followed by the closure of the northbound off-ramp at Cabrillo Boulevard a few weeks later. Detours will also be used to guide drivers to alternate exits. Throughout construction, crews will keep two lanes open in each direction during the day.

Santa Barbara North will also add a new peak-period carpool lane in each direction between Hermosillo Road and Salinas Street.  The aim is to maintain traffic access. The project is expected to be completed in 2028. Other improvements will include reconstructed lanes to improve visibility, updated ramps, drainage, lighting and signage. California over the years has made significant progress in revamping its road transport with projects such as the Highway 17 in Santa Cruz being completed.

Scope of Implementation on the Highway 101 Widening Project

The status of the Highway 101 widening project had been outlined earlier last week to the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments. Fred Luna, director of Project Delivery & Construction, called the start of the final phase of the highway project a “huge milestone.”

The Santa Barbara part of the project was split into two portions. It spanned 11 miles between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. Scope of implementation originally entailed the project being split into multiple phases. It allowed local governments to pay for construction as work progressed rather than in a single lump sum. The total cost of the project is an estimated $700 million.

Moreover, it is partially funded by Measure A. SBCAG which announced last year that it secured $134 million in funding for the last portion of the project. The last segment will add a carpool lane between Hermosillo Road and Salinas Street. Crews will also build a new interchange and two bridges at Cabrillo Boulevard and a new southbound on-ramp near Los Patos Way.
