Scaffoldings are temporary structures used to support the original structure as well as workmen during construction. There are different types of scaffolding depending on the worksite and the mode of construction. There various types of scaffolding are used in construction and for other purposes as well such as decorating, room designs, and even window cleaning. Below are the key types of scaffoldings;
1.Trestle scaffolding
Trestle scaffolding is mainly used for interiors work like paintings, room cleaning, and repairs. It is supported on movable tripods or ladders and can be used up to 5 meters in height.
2.Patented scaffolding
They are found ready-made in the market and are mainly made from steel. The joints are fitted with special kinds of farms or couplings that hold it strongly. The working platform of the patented scaffolding is set in the brackets in a way that it is adjustable to required extents and thus preferred by the construction workers.
3.Single scaffolding
Single scaffolding is made of only one row and used for the construction purpose of brick walls. The types of scaffoldings comprise ledgers, standards, and putlogs among others. The ledgers are joined at a distance of 1.2–1.5m and the standards are placed at a distance of 2–2.5m.
4.Double scaffolding
Double scaffoldings are mainly used in construction works involving stone masonry. They are mainly made in two rows to support the digging of holes in the stone walls as it is hard to do so in such constructions. The first row is placed between 20 to 30cm away from the wall while the second row stands around 1m from the first one so that they can form stiff support for the construction work.
5.Suspended scaffolding
This is similar to the patented scaffolding and is used when painting and repair purposes for the exteriors of the house. It has its working platform suspended from the roofs through wires or chains and it can be pulled up or down depending on the area of the work carried out in the construction sites.
6.Cantilever Scaffolding
Cantilever scaffoldings have their standards supported by a chain of needles which can be pulled out via holes in the wall. This is a “single frame” scaffolding-type. In another type called independent or double frame scaffolding, the needles are supported inside the floors via the openings. Cantilever scaffoldings are mainly used when constructing the upper parts of the wall, when the ground is not capable of supporting standards, and when the ground is close to the wall and is free from traffic.
7.Kwikstage Scaffolding
Another of the types of scaffoldings is the Kwikstage scaffoldings, which are manufactured from hard-wearing galvanized steel. The biggest advantage of this system is that it is very simple to assemble and also very simple to demolish. This type of scaffolding is ideal for both small and large projects. Using a strong and safe interlocking system, the patented Kwikstage modular system can be built to any height.
8.Aerial Lifts
Aerial lifts are used when there is a need for construction workers to access several floors in order to complete the job. In addition, aerial lifts make it safer, quicker, and easier to move large amounts of materials and workers to different levels of the building. They are used if building work is being completed on the exterior of a multi-story building and materials need to be moved outside two or more floors.
9.Mobile Scaffolding
Mobile scaffoldings are where there are easy access and minimal movements. A key factor to consider before choosing mobile scaffoldings is the number of movements that will be needed by the scaffolding itself. It is advisable to use a single scaffolding structure or a number of single structures.
