Air ConditioningCutting Energy Costs

By Yvonne Andiva

Chillers are typically used as part of an air conditioning system to cool the inside air, creating a more comfortable and productive environment.

Chillers are also used in data centres as well as manufacturing environments where they to provide “process” cooling to equipment in an effort to maximize productivity.

They are the single largest energy-using component in most facilities, and can typically consume over 50% of the electrical usage.

In these days of fluctuating fuel and energy costs it is imperative that building owners manage their cooling costs more effectively and efficiently.

Chillers running inefficiently result in decreased equipment reliability, increased maintenance intervals and shortened lifespan. The slightest decrease in chillers performance can have a major impact on efficiency. To reduce costs and maximise efficiencies some businesses also use hybrid chillers and demand response chillers which offer an alternative solution to reducing the payback period of purchasing costs.

Hydronic-based air conditioning systems

Traditional hydronic chilled water systems have long provided very comfortable and reliable air conditioning and come with several major advantages: excellent indoor comfort (especially with multiple zones), lower energy costs and improved IAQ. New developments have made employing hydronic-based air conditioning systems even more attractive: radiant cooling using chilled beams, a single-pipe distribution system that can dramatically lower first costs, and use of variable speed drives to reduce pump energy consumption.

Taco, Inc. supplies a full range of commercial size pumps (with variable speed options) and associated equipment, including multi-purpose valves and heat exchangers. Taco also offers a proprietary single pipe distribution system called LoadMatch®, which relies on small, low kW pumps to move system water, and eliminates the need for expensive, energy-consuming control valves and most balancing valves. Taco’s LOFLo® Mixing Block controls the lowest possible flow rate by maintaining the highest possible supply water temperatures when cooling. The LoadMatch and LOFlo systems can be integrated with ceiling-mounted chilled beams for radiant cooling throughout a building. Dehumidification (latent cooling) is handled by a separate 100% dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) to supply dry, conditioned air to interior spaces.

Energy saving cooling technology

Eaton-Williams designs and manufactures energy efficient heating ventilating, air conditioning and humidification solutions. From the latest heat management solutions for data centre cooling using rear door heat exchangers (RDHX) to controlled environments for commercial buildings, operating theatres and clean rooms. All products are fully supported with nationwide 24/7 service and maintenance programmes for optimal performance, reduced emissions and maximum energy savings. The company also manufactures cellar cooling equipment and cool storage solutions used by the catering, food and florist industries.

The company won HVR Air Conditioning Product of the Year 2011 award for its FANWALL TECHNOLOGY® – FANWALL systems offer an innovative way of customising air handling units using a number of high efficiency small diameter direct driven fans instead of using single large fans. The fans are mounted in an array within the air handler’s intake and are typically more efficient than conventional air handlers.

FANWALL is ideal for new construction and retrofit application requirements, while providing the benefits of redundancy, quiet and vibration-free operation, and optimised energy efficiency from design minimum to maximum flow, and low cost maintenance and service.

Building on its long experience of cooling data centres, Eaton-Williams has designed and supplied a bespoke cooling solution for Colt’s (leading information delivery platform in Europe) flagship modular data centre in North London.

The London 3 modular data centre is a cutting edge tier 3 managed services site. The data centre has been designed as modules of 500m² which can be constructed in less than four months offering customers a highly power-efficient turnkey solution.

In addition as a result of the unique construction techniques used to build the modular data centre, customers have the added flexibility of being able to choose where they house it – whether in a Colt location or alternate customer site of choice, anywhere in Europe.

There is also the added ability to build large-scale data centres in 500m² increments to the size and layout of choice. This enables customers to expand the site as their needs grow by simply adding further modules.

Colt’s overriding demand was for optimum energy efficiency without compromising operational resilience. The result, known as the CTF, relies primarily on outside air to provide the cooling. Although fitted with conventional refrigeration for those occasions when the outside temperature is above acceptable levels, the CTF optimises the use of the free cooling from the outside air and so contributes to the impressive overall data centre PUE of 1.21.

Each 500m² modular data centre has 12 high efficiency CTF cooling units arrayed across the end of the module and outside the white space. Each unit has multiple variable speed Electronically Commutated (EC) fans and compressors, to minimise energy use and provide N+1resilience and is designed to maintain the data centre at 21˙c ± 3˙c and humidity between 20 and 80% RH.

The whole conditioning system is based on complex control algorithms designed to manage the CTF year round 24/7, to deliver supply air at 18 – 24ºC and 20 – 80% RH conditions irrespective of data hall load and outside temperature. The unit controller is integrated to the facility’s Building Management System (BMS) to seamlessly switch between operating modes to ensure the most energy efficient delivery of cooling to precisely match the data centre requirements.
Whenever ambient temperatures permit the unit provides fresh air cooling. From 100% fresh air at 24ºC, as the ambient temperature drops it automatically mixes warm return air with cold ambient fresh air to maintain the desired supply air temperature.

If ambient humidity levels are out of the levels permitted in the data centre the unit automatically switches to indirect glycol cooling utilising the integral run-around-coil heat exchangers within the CTF80. Only in high ambient conditions will the unit operate in mechanical cooling refrigeration mode but again power usage is minimised as the variable speed compressors can precisely match cooling load to that required within the data centre.

Across all cooling modes EC speed controllable fans and floor pressure monitoring match the volume of supply air to the room loading and layout to minimise energy consumption.
Smartcool Systems (UK) Ltd is a company that provides the ESM which is their leading product for chillers, large-scale refrigeration (like the racks for supermarkets), and other complex applications. Within a chiller, compressors are the largest energy users, consuming up to 70% of the total energy within the system.  The compressors therefore offer an excellent opportunity for energy savings.

Smartcool’s ESM and ECO3 retrofit products use an intelligent compressor optimization strategy to make compressor in air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pump systems more energy efficient.  The ESM is Smartcool’s most advanced product, providing full compatibility with any kind of chiller with any kind of compressor.
Typical energy efficiency results from Smartcool’s ESM on chillers with advanced Building Management System (BMS) control are in the range of 10% to 15% (kWh).  Base demand is also reduced by an average of 10% (kW), providing substantial savings for customers in areas where the utility company imposes high peak demand charges. The ESM is installed between the compressor and the primary controller.  Alternately in a chiller-BMS scenario, an indirect interface card provided by the chiller manufacturer can be used.

Once installed, the ESM continuously collects data on the operating profile of the chiller, learning how the existing control system interprets demand, and how the plant is run to accommodate that demand.  Using this information, Smartcool’s ESM intelligently varies the compressor capacity, dynamically shedding load when it is not needed to reach the cooling requirements.  The variation in capacity is constantly adjusted to suit the changing load conditions, maximizing the amount of time the compressor operates at its highest rated efficiency.
Smartcool has been able to increase the energy efficiency of compressors in over 27,000 installations worldwide, saving customers hundreds of thousands of dollars and reducing their carbon footprint.

Reducing carbon emissions and energy costs

Waterloo Air Products PLC has earned and maintained an enviable reputation for ventilation system design, engineering and manufacture. Waterloo’s new range of air terminal devices maximises the benefits of displacement ventilation to provide indoor air quality control that reduces energy costs and cut carbon emissions.

Displacement ventilation uses the natural thermal convection of warm air to deliver ventilation and comfort and is a more energy efficient and quieter alternative to conventional overhead systems. Displacement ventilation offers a cost-effective solution for producing and maintaining draught free indoor air quality.

Depending on the application, a well designed system can significantly reduce energy costs, and address the clean-tech agenda by exploiting fresh-air based ‘free-cooling’ for a large proportion of the year. Displacement ventilation has been used very successfully in northern Europe for more than 30 years. End users are driving the demand for more natural and energy efficient air distribution solutions in a bid to cut their emissions, displacement ventilation addresses the criteria and has come of age.

The addition of displacement ventilation technology to Waterloo’s product range also provides customers with a more integrated solution to meet their air distribution requirements and complements the company’s range of chilled beams and air distribution units. Included in the range are recessed, semi-recessed, floor, wall and corner units to suit a variety of applications whilst offering customers flexibility in their design.

Constructed from galvanised steel or stainless steel (specific products) each unit integrates seamlessly into any installation whilst offering excellent performance characteristics and aesthetically pleasing profiles.

Applications: – A displacement system works optimally in environments such as theatres, conference rooms, restaurants where there are both high heat loads and high contaminant loads from occupants. Gravity pulls the fresh air supplied near the floor down to the ground where it spreads across the room until it comes into contact with a heat source.
The cool air then rises as it collects heat from the occupants and other heat sources, pushing warm stale air towards the ceiling where it is exhausted via extract grilles. This vertical air flow also makes it less likely that contaminants will spread horizontally across the room. This provides effective ventilation and cooling as fresh air is delivered directly into the occupied zone.

Hygiene:-For those applications which require high levels of hygiene, Waterloo has designed wall mounted and free standing units based on a module system that can be built to the required level of hygiene. The design incorporates rigid framework, fully welded corners and a minimum of flanges and edges to minimise collection of dirt.
Benefits:-Lower installed cooling capacity, Longer period for use of free cooling, Improved air quality in occupied zones,  Draught free air supply,  Little or no maintenance, Energy efficient.

Coadis Line active comfort unit

Coadis Line is the new-generation CIAT comfort unit. All-in-one and particularly easy to integrate, it is designed to guarantee your projects superior results both in terms of design and performance. It reduces energy consumption, improves air quality, and adapts easily to all installation configurations. An eco-designed solution, Coadis Line is 87% recyclable, and in France, it has won the “coup de coeur” special prize awarded by the Rhne-Alpes Trophies for Eco-innovations.

Coadis Line is integrated into the Hysys water loop system solution that provides heating, cooling and air quality for offices, hotels and retirement homes. By combining Coanda effect diffusion with ultra high quality Epure filtration as standard, Coadis Line provides enhanced working comfort for users. It enables them to benefit from excellent indoor air quality, an advantage that makes all the difference when compared to passive equipment. CIAT, pioneer for Coanda diffusion system, goes even further with Coadis Line, by optimising it in accordance with standard EN ISO 7730. Occupants are thus placed in a “comfort zone” from head to toe protected from the unpleasant thermal phenomena that can be caused by direct supply systems.

What is more, Coadis Line also features Epure technology, which safeguards occupants’ health and guarantees excellent indoor air quality thanks to a filtration system that takes concentration levels of PM 2.5 particles suspended in the air to below the threshold recommended by the WHO (10 g/m).

Coadis Line is also characterised by its low energy consumption levels, thanks to its High Energy Efficiency (HEE) motor, fitted as standard, which uses very little power, cutting electricity consumption by up to 85%, and its exchanger coils optimised to match the performance levels of the system’s other equipment. Coadis Line hence plays an active part in obtaining certifications such as HQE, EPBD, BREEAM, or LEED, and meets the requirements set out in the new French RT2012 thermal regulations.

CIAT has created the Flexisay concept to cater for all types of space, their modular characteristics and future developments. The Coadis line’s single-slit, one- or four-way diffusion system on a single type of frame, allows it to be installed in partitioned or open-space office layouts alike. The “one-way” version is designed for partitioned areas covering 10 to 20 sq. m with each unit placed at the edge of the area.

The four-way version is dedicated to open spaces, with the unit installed centrally. Both configurations fit into 600 x 600 mm or 675 x 675 mm suspended ceiling grids. In each case, the interior elements can be accessed without removing the suspended ceiling tiles, via the quick-release filter holder grille that is hinged to provide maximum freedom of movement during servicing work.

Coadis Line is an integral part of the CIAT Group’s Sustainable Development programme, and fully reflects its eco-design policy. The comfort unit can be completely disassembled, and above all, it is 87% recyclable. This is mainly thanks to the compatibility of the plastics used. Moreover, it is assembled without using any adhesives or rivets, and the number of fixing elements is reduced by 40%. Its new compact design also reduces the weight of the raw materials used by 30%, and their volume by 21%. Furthermore, CIAT selects suppliers of raw materials that are close to the factory, thus cutting transport packaging volumes by 50%, to significantly reduce CO2 emission levels.

Coadis Line is integrated into the Hysys water loop system solutions designed by CIAT. Drawing on tried and tested standard components, the Hysys system solutions are more efficient and use less energy, enabling professional specialists and users to comply with the most demanding environmental regulations.

They are adapted to suit the specific constraints of each market sector, with Hysys Office for administration and office installations, Hysys Hotel for hotel buildings, and Hysys Senior for retirement homes, and they are fully modular. This means that there are more than a hundred different cost-effective versions available to suit each specific configuration. The HYSYS solutions are fully upgradeable and they feature several comfort ranges, all providing the most efficient environmental performance levels.

Fan Coil Technology

Quartz is a division of Tev Ltd which is part of the Thermal Energy Ventures Group. They offer highly experienced technical support, a national sales team and national maintenance / technical team coverage. In these days of increasing energy costs and climate change it is incumbent on all of us that the most efficient and cost effective solutions are employed in every design.

One of the tools available to the designer to reduce energy consumption is to use electronically commutated, direct current (EcDc) motors. Not only do these motors use substantially less energy than their alternating current (Ac) counterparts, they are also infinitely speeding controllable. This latter feature enables the motor speed to be adjusted with relationship to occupancy and temperature and ensures that, for the majority of their operation, they are running at the minimum speed required for correct comfort conditions. The net effect is to further substantially reduce energy use and hence running cost when compared to the Ac counterpart.

For example Comparative Figures between an Ac Fan and a Ec/Dc Fan Motor Power input at speed 3 and against a resistance of 30Pa is 118W for Ac and 50W for Ec/Dc. Their comparative Specific Fan Power at this rating are 0.75 for the Ac motor and 0.31 for the Ec/Dc motor. EcDc motors are currently available as an option on all SAPPHIRE & AMBER fan coils. Quartz include in the package all filters required to ensure compliance with European regulations relating to electromagnetic emissions.
Low carbon option for fan coils

Low CO2, available for the Quartz standard fan coil range, is a low energy, low carbon option that makes full use of the new technologies available and results in an exceptionally energy efficient climate control system. The LoCO2 main areas for energy saving are in the use of higher temperature water for cooling (enables free cooling and high chiller efficiency), lower water temperature for heating (enables the use of condensing boilers or heat pumps) and reduction in the use of energy for air movement. The option has a separate coil for heating, designed to maintain typical heating duties whilst utilising low temperature water (typically 50/40°C) and a specialist cooling coil that will maintain cooling duties when operating with (relatively) high temperature cooling water (12/17°C). In addition, the fan coils are fitted with EcDc motors that, if operated with the Quartz suggested strategy, modulate the fan speed with respect to occupancy thereby reducing energy use.

Loco2 also features; heating coils designed to have negligible airflow resistance whilst utilising 60/40°C or 50/40°C water for heating and using 12/17°C water for cooling; EcDc motor, with suggested strategy for optimum fan performance at minimum energy use; Frame filter to EU2/3 filtration standard; Lower capital cost than chilled beam equivalents; Whole life costing that are similar to current best technology.

GreenHeat

Marstair which is a division of Tev Ltd, have created a range of MRC+ condensing units specifically for use with the GreenHeat Cassette Unit, called the MRC+GH version. The unit incorporates all the internal pipework and valves required to enable connection between the condensing unit and the GreenHeat Cassette Unit, thus simplifying the installation.

The system captures the waste heat from your outdoor condensing unit that would normally be lost to the atmosphere and uses it as background heating to warm the store reducing both your heating bills and carbon footprint. Based on our extremely successful and proven CC600 Ceiling Cassette unit the CC600MGH combines rapid installation and ease of maintenance.

Features include:- Low sound levels, Long air throws, 3 or 4 way air discharge, Removable, lightweight, one piece chassis, Integral, easy to clean, drain tray, Easy accessed long life washable filters, Modern, slim, square fascia with rounded corners. All services accessed from one corner, Access to coil from all sides for easy cleaning, Fan guard for safety, Fresh air inlet provision and branch duct provision, Fan speed ranged selectable by the installer to suit the application.

Air Blast Coolers

F&R Products Ltd is a cooling agent for Hyfra Pedia water chillers and Decsa evaporative cooling towers.  Many industries still rely on the town’s mains water supply to fulfil their cooling requirements. However, this has become increasingly impractical and expensive; water metering, effluent charges and a need to be independent from disruptions to mains supplies by drought make the purchase of an industrial cooling system an essential, attractive and economical proposition.

Air blast water coolers, otherwise known as dry air coolers, are the most cost effective way of cooling process water. They incur both capital costs and ongoing electricity charges – however, they do bring significant savings in ongoing running costs.

Although the cost of a dry air cooler can be greater than an evaporative cooling tower, the maintenance costs are minimal. Evaporative cooling towers have a legislative requirement to be cleaned twice annually which requires a system shut down while it is cleaned, as well as requiring expensive chemical treatment to prevent legionella within the water plus ongoing system monitoring requirements. Dry air coolers have no such requirements leaving them suitable for in operation all year round and not incurring costly maintenance.

Dry air coolers are able to cool water to within 3°C of ambient, but it should be noted when designing or specifying those units that the greater the approach temperatures (difference between ambient and water leaving temperature) the more economical they become.

Air blast coolers have an added advantage over open circuit evaporative cooling towers in that the water is contained within a sealed system, does not come into contact with air borne containments and so remains clean. All contact surfaces within F&R’s air blast coolers are non ferrous so providing the external pipework is also of non ferrous material, the water will remain clean and uncontaminated.

Free standing air blast coolers can be supplied with horizontal or vertical air flow with the heat exchangers on the larger units formed into a ‘V’ formation to reduce their footprint. All models are efficient, economical and easy to operate with special attention having been given to their design to achieve optimum thermal efficiency as well as allowing for low noise and low energy criteria to be met. Duties range from 3kW to 1000s of kW.

Adiabatic Coolers

Whilst dry air coolers will only cool water to within 3°C of ambient, there is a further option which allows this form of cooling to achieve water off (water leaving the system) temperatures as low as to within 6°C of wet bulb ambients. This is known as an adiabatic system, where in higher summer ambients a fine mist of water is sprayed on to the heat exchanger surface reducing the air temperature on the cooling coil. Adiabatic systems are complete with an ultraviolet light water treatment system so again no requirement for chemical water treatment but with the advantage of water temperatures being below dry bulb ambients.

Applications for air blast water coolers, (dry air coolers) and adiabatic systems are anywhere a process requires cool clean water such as such as condenser cooling induction furnaces, hydraulic cooling, compressors, quench tanks, printing machines, vacuum pumps and many others. In some instances it will be necessary to install the dry air coolers externally in this instance extra care should be taken to avoid frost damage during the winter.

F&R Products specialise in the specification, manufacture and installation of cooling systems including dry air coolers and can advise on the most appropriate solution for your needs.

Altherma

Crystal Sigma Ltd is a leading specialist in air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, heating and electrical services London, for the home and the business place.

The Daikin Altherma total heating and cooling system is based on heat pump technology and represents a flexible and cost effective alternative to a fossil fuel boiler, with a cooling and sanitary warm water option. The inherent energy efficiency characteristics of Altherma make it an ideal solution to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

Altherma’s remarkable energy efficiency stems from its unique combination of the highly efficient Daikin inverter driven compressor and variable set point temperature capability, which enables the system to match its output precisely to the actual heating demand of the building.

The outdoor unit extracts free low temperature heat from the surrounding air and increases its temperature. Upgraded heat is then transmitted via the refrigerant circuit to the indoor hydro-box.

The indoor hydro-box transfers the heat in the refrigerant to the water circulated in the central heating radiators, under floor heating system and sanitary hot water tank. In the combined heating & cooling version of the indoor hydro-box cooling is achieved by reducing the water temperature to 4°C and circulating it through fan coil units. The system can also provide moderate cooling via the under floor heating system or radiators by limiting the lowest water temperature. The preparation of sanitary hot water is performed by switching the system from cooling or heating to sanitary mode.

Mist Elimination Systems

Munters ME manufactures Mist Elimination Systems primarily for gas cleaning, intake of ambient air, oil and gas, gas cooling and evaporation. They are found in power plants, process industry, chemical, petrochemical, pulp and paper, sugar, steel, fertilizer, HVAC, shipbuilding and Marine and Offshore applications.

Behind air coolers mist eliminators remove the condensed water and avoid thereby the presence of water in the duct. Air handling units that humidify the air using the spray technology (fogging systems) use mist eliminators to remove the small droplets from the spray nozzles.

The presence of water causes corrosion and facilitates the growth of bacteria and mildew. Munters Mist Eliminators avoid such undesirable consequences and are available in individual designs that can be easily fitted into air handling units.

AHU30 and AHU50 Air handling units
