Updated on November 19, 2025- Kenya’s Health CS Aden Duale on Monday commissioned the construction of the new 4,000-bed Moi Referral Multi-speciality hospital in Eldoret. This mega health facility is expected to cost over Ksh50 billion ($563 million).

Duale commissioned construction works that will be supervised by KDF at Kiplombe near the Eldoret Airstrip. This is where the first phase of the hospital will be completed within the next 18 months.

Project name: New Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Multi-Specialty Hospital

Location: Kiplombe, near the Eldoret Airstrip, Eldoret.

Total estimated cost: Over Sh50 Billion (approximately US$563 million)

Phase 1 details:

  • 2,000-bed capacity
  • Expected to be completed within 18 months from commissioning (around April 2027)

Commissioning date: it was officially commissioned by the Health Cabinet Secretary on November 17, 2025.

Contractor: Chinese firm China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Company Limited

Land allocation: The facility is being built on a 200-acre parcel of land.

Expected employment: Projected to employ over 6,000 healthcare workers. Additionally, it will involve over 15,000 people in the construction phase.

Phased Development

The first phase of the upcoming mega healthcare facility will have a 2,000-bed capacity. Similarly, another capacity will be established later.

Duale commissioned the project as per a directive from President William Ruto. Additionally, the president wants the facility finished within the set time.

Furthermore, the CS stated that the upcoming hospital was President Ruto’s vision since the time he was Deputy President. However, the facility could not commence because of politics.

Additionally, the hospital is expected to offer all expert services. This is part of President Ruto’s vision to ensure Kenyans enjoy universal healthcare.

The Hospital to Become Africa’s Largest

Also, as revealed by MTRH CEO Dr Phillip Kirwa, the facility will be the largest hospital in Africa. Over 15,000 people are executive to be involved in the construction works of the facility.

Furthermore, the facility is expected to employ over 6,000 healthcare workers.

Kenya has been gearing up its healthcare infrastructure with recent developments of healthcare facilities such as the Cardiothoracic and Emergency Center for Tenwek in Bomet County.

The CS for Health, Susan Wafula, revealed the government’s plans to build a modern, 2,000-bed multi-specialty Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), at Kiplombe.

She said that the move is part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving access to quality, affordable healthcare in the country.

Wafula stated that the facility’s designs are complete. According to her, the government is looking for a suitable funding mechanism to begin the project.

The CS commented during a recent visit to the hospital in Eldoret, when she had a conversation with CEO Dr. Wilson Aruasa.

Wafula commended the hospital’s management for its outstanding performance. It is said that the performance led to the facility being designated the Health Ministry’s best semi-autonomous government agency for the past six years in the performance management system.

She added that the Ministry of Health will handle the budgetary requirements raised by MTRH management. This is to ensure that MTRH meets all of her staff, training, equipment, and also other needs.

She stated that this would elevate Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital to a high pedestal. This is due to its contribution to the Kenyan people’s achievement of universal health care.

The hospital’s construction is scheduled to be completed in the coming one and a half years. She stated that the ministry will also help with staffing and equipment.

Wafula said that in an attempt to reduce healthcare costs, the government has initiated huge governance changes through the Ministry of Health. This include the NHIF and KEMSA as targets.

The government, according to the CS, has also combined a number of programs. They  include the Linda Mama program and the expected augmentation of the health insurance subsidy program for the poor and most vulnerable to five million poor households over the coming three years.

According to Dr. Aruasa, the hospital serves as the center for 22 counties. Additionally, MTRH handles patients from other countries. He also added that it is still important to ongoing health reforms.

The CEO cited the MTRH Nawiri Recovery and Skills Project. It offers opportunities for mental health patients to learn economic development skills. The CEO claimed that the facility has carried out innovative concepts to help address current difficulties.
