Cardiothoracic and Emergency Centre for Tenwek Hospital is an ultramodern hospital building under construction approximately 300m west of the main Tenwek Hospital campus in Bomet County, Kenya.

The facility is meant to provide a 176 bed-self-contained surgical center all within 4-storey levels above ground and 2 basements.

Generally, the Cardiothoracic and Emergency Centre is mainly made up of two interlinked blocks connected through a central core with three hospital lifts and a W-shaped ramp. Each of the three blocks has an adequate provision of staircases for fire escape within a 30 meters distance.

Designed for both outpatients and inpatients, the Cardiothoracic and Emergency Centre is equipped with spaces and facilities that demonstrate an understanding of the hierarchy of functions in a hospital.

On the ground and first floors, the building is set to have examination rooms, a pharmacy, a lab, a blood bank, CT and X-ray machines while on the second floor, it has an endoscopy suite that has four theatres, a 16-bed recovery room, a training center with classrooms, a conference hall, offices, and a heart surgery suite.

The third floor on the other hand will have six cardiothoracic theaters, a hybrid theater, a preoperative holding area, and a 32-bed post-anesthesia care center, while the fourth floor will house general wards accommodating up to 80 patients beds.

To increase resiliency during frequent power cutouts, the hospital features a mechanically assisted natural ventilation system (the surgical ward and many patient areas feature full humidity and temperature control) and supplemental ramps that facilitate the uninterrupted movement of patients.

Other sustainable innovations include solar panels positioned on a low-slope standing seam roof, the use of hollow-core concrete blocks produced on-site, and the collection and reuse of rainwater for on-site laundry.

The project also encompasses 15 three-bedroom and 5 two-bedroom apartments for visitors. Improved water infrastructure is also factored in to ensure that the entire medical campus has access to reliably clean water from a nearby river.
