President Donald Trump will make an announcement on Monday on a Minnesota company’s plan to construct a US$15 billion steel mill in Iowa. This information was revealed by a White House official. This steel plant project stands as a major investment that the administration is highlighting as it seeks to promote domestic manufacturing ahead of the November midterm elections. Also, the project alongside Nucor’s New Lexington Rebar Mill Project will boost the country’s production of steel products.
Trump is expected to unveil the proposal at the White House with executives from Mesabi Metallics. This company recently opened Minnesota’s first new iron ore mine in 50 years, a White House official said.
Production Capacity
The proposed mill would initially have annual production capacity of 7.5 million tons, making it one of the largest steel plants in the US. Later additions could lift capacity to about 10 million tons a year, the White House official said.

Economic Benefits
The $15 billion Mesabi Metallics steel mill project will deliver a major economic boost to Iowa and the broader U.S. manufacturing sector. The steel mill will create over 1,700 direct high-paying jobs alongside thousands of indirect construction and supply chain positions.
Additionally, by introducing a massive initial output capacity of 7.5 million tons annually, scaling up to 10 million tons, the mega-facility will substantially expand domestic industrial capacity, stabilize critical metals supply chains, and lower reliance on foreign imports. Furthermore, the multi-billion-dollar capital injection will generate significant long-term tax revenues for local infrastructure and public services while stimulating regional economic growth across Midwestern industrial corridors.
