Tanzania will on September 8, 2026 inaugurate the second phase of the Mtumba Government City in Dodoma. This is a Sh698 billion ($270 million) complex intended to accelerate the consolidation of ministries and state institutions in the country’s administrative capital. This project follows Egypt’s trend, where the Egyptian government also established the New Administrative Capital in a move to centralize government administrative operations.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan will inaugurate the development. The development comprises 26 ministry office buildings, 11 government institutions and 57.1 kilometres of paved roads, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prof Palamagamba Kabudi told journalists on Sunday.

Timeline and Capacity

The project  began in October 2021. It will provide office space for approximately 18,510 government employees, Prof Kabudi said.

The development forms part of Tanzania’s broader effort to complete the transfer of government operations from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma, a process that has gained momentum in recent years.

“The second phase, which began in October 2021, cost Sh698 billion,” Prof Kabudi said.

The Government City will bring together officials currently working from scattered locations across Dodoma, including temporary facilities, in a central administrative hub.

The project includes 42 kilometres of underground electricity infrastructure, water and wastewater systems, telecommunications networks, security installations and fire and rescue facilities.

Sustainability

Prof Kabudi said the city was being developed as a “smart and green city”, with plans to utilise solar energy, harvest rainwater and maximise natural lighting and ventilation.

The second phase follows the completion of an initial development comprising 23 office buildings in 2019.

The government has increasingly positioned Dodoma as the centre of public administration since deciding to move the capital from Dar es Salaam. Parliament and the Executive are already based in Dodoma, while the Judiciary has also relocated.

The Government City is expected to further consolidate state institutions in Dodoma while supporting demand for transport, housing, services and other economic activity in the capital.

The project also includes public transport facilities and infrastructure designed to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.

Prof Kabudi said the development demonstrated the capacity of Tanzanian institutions and companies to deliver major infrastructure projects.
