BMW Manufacturing Co. has plans of expanding its operations by building a new BMW Logistics Center in Spartanburg County. The automobile manufacturing company announced recently that it would invest $100 million to develop this 1 million-square-foot logistics center on a 120 acre-site at Freeman Farm Road, just across Interstate 85 from its Greer plant.

BMW logistics center project includes 2 private bridges

The BMW Logistics Center is being built with the aim of consolidating two of the company’s offsite logistics operations and If completed, it will become a major addition to BMW’s Greer, South Carolina Operations. The project also covers the development of two private bridges which are intended to link the new facility to the main BMW campus and also minimize the impact of truck traffic. One bridge will be built over Freeman Farm Road and the second bridge will go over I-85. The new warehousing facility and private bridges are scheduled for completion in mid-2022. Construction work on this project will be led by Becknell Industrial.

A Councilman from Spartanburg County, David Britt, was impressed with the development plans for the BMW Logistics Center. Britt pointed out that BMW prioritized safety and always carried out plans with the public in mind. He explained that the private bridges being built were meant to keep traffic off the public roads. Britt also added, “BMW changed Spartanburg, South Carolina, and the Upstate and the state of South Carolina forever.”

The Governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster also commended BMW Manufacturing for their commitment to the state. He welcomed their new expansion, which brings the BMW Logistics Center to Spartanburg County. McMaster also acknowledged that the continued success of BMW’s Upstate operations have resulted in transforming South Carolina into a true manufacturing powerhouse.

Dr. Robert Engelhorn, the CEO and BMW Manufacturing president mentioned that the  BMW Logistics Center would play an important role in consolidating the company’s logistics processes and also implementing efficiency measures to ensure a more sustainable logistics operation. Engelhorn also said, “This expansion in our logistics operation represents our continued commitment to this state, and it will prepare Plant Spartanburg for the future.”
