Construction will soon commence on a $25 million Phoenix-Mesa Gateway terminal expansion project in Arizona. The airport has plans of replacing its temporary buildings with a 30,000-square-foot permanent concourse to improve East Mesa’s efficiency. As a result, the temporary structures have been scheduled for demolition by December.
But before the demolition begins, the airport staff intend on constructing a three-gate “jump structure” to replace the temporary structures on-site. Therefore, the new interim structure will remain operational until the Mesa Gateway terminal expansion project reaches completion by February 2024. This new tent-like facility will have insulation and air conditioning that can be dismantled when it’s no longer required.

Development plans for the Mesa Gateway terminal expansion
Airport officials expect the Mesa Gateway terminal expansion to provide an ADA-enhanced commercial facility that will accommodate more passengers. At present, the airport’s 10,000-square-foot temporary structure has 10 gates. But it only has a limited number of flights each day. The terminal expansion project will not only help the airport operate more efficiently, but also increase its flight capacity. Upon completion, the new terminal will add 11 gates, as well as concession spaces and a new retail component.
McCarthy Building Companies is the contractor working on the Mesa Gateway terminal expansion project. According to McCarthy Building’s project manager, Thomas Assante, the airport will remain fully operational throughout the construction phase. He said their construction team would employ strategies to ensure uninterrupted airport operations and a convenient passenger experience,
According to Mesa airport’s spokesman, Ryan Smith, the Mesa Gateway terminal expansion is partly funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Thus far, the airport has received a $14.4 million grant from the bill’s first year of funding. On top of that, the airport is still expecting an additional $6.2 million in grants. This grant also covers some of the remaining construction costs that are eligible for federal funding.
The Mesa Airport Director, J. Brian O’Neill, was grateful for the financial support from the federal government. He said the airport was excited about the Mesa Gateway terminal expansion and was looking forward to working with McCarthy.
