The AfDB electricity enhancement in Congo takes shape as the Republic of Congo sign deals to boost electricity access. The two parties have signed two grant agreements totaling $1.5 million to strengthen the country’s energy sector. Furthermore, it will improve people’s access to electricity and reduce the country’s energy deficit. According to the Bank, the first grant of $585,000 will fund development studies for hydroelectric dams. The funds will be drawn from the Middle Income Country Technical Assistance Fund. The aim is to facilitate the future development of hydroelectric infrastructure at Mbanza Ndounga in the country’s south. It aims to connect it to Linzolo, which is 20 kilometers south of Congo’s capital city. These sites have been earmarked for improved electricity production capacity that will help foster independence. The second grant of $995,000 funded by the Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation Trust Fund (KOAFEC).

The Scope of Implementation of AfDB Electricity Enhancement in Congo
The second grant on the AfDB electricity enhancement in Congo will go towards a specific feasibility study. The grant will facilitate the feasibility study and detailed design of transmission lines between Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville. Furthermore, it will facilitate similar transmissions to Loudima and Djambala. These agreements are a sign of the close relationship that Congo’s government maintains with the AfDB.

“The various studies will accompany the implementation of Congo’s strategy in terms of electrification of its urban centers,” noted Ngatse. Furthermore, he noted that the projects will help the nation to open up power pools with neighboring countries. The Bank noted that the grants will be used to prepare core, short investments projects. Moreover, these are in line with the terms of energy access outlined in the Mission 300. Moreover, AfDB’s electricity enhancement in Congo aims to ensure access in rural areas, aiming to work towards universal access to electricity for every Congolese.
