The well-known Toronto Eaton Center is set to receive a massive CAD$77 million facelift as announced by Cadillac Fairview, the mall owner. The project would involve a CAD$60 million rehabilitation of its galleria skylight ceiling and an extra CAD$17 million in accessibility upgrades for consumers. The roof renovation will be completed in two parts, beginning with the south end of the mall in mid this month. Work on the north end will not begin until March 2023, implying that this will be a protracted undertaking.

The renovation will be handled by EllisDon Corporation and will be designed by Zeidler Architecture Inc. and Read Jones Christoffersen consulting engineers. The construction of three additional staircases in the South Court and Urban Eatery, modifications to elevators, and the installation of a bigger cab in an existing elevator to better handle strollers and mobility scooters will increase shopper accessibility. The improvements will make it easier to connect and create a more pleasant environment throughout the property. The shopping center’s beloved “Flight Stop” art installation, which depicts sixty Canada geese in mid-flight and has come to serve as the center’s visual identity, will be temporarily and carefully removed by an art restoration company for professional maintenance and stored in safe storage until re-installation.

“Cadillac Fairview is happy to invest in its properties on a regular basis in order to provide a world-class shopping experience. The initial architecture of the galleria was inspired by the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Italy, and it has functioned as a defining element of the mall since its inception in 1977. As caretakers of this one-of-a-kind architectural piece, our first aim is to maintain the design’s integrity while dramatically improving its functional performance “said Wayne Barwise, Cadillac Fairview’s Executive Vice President of Development.
