Construction of the first dual railway vertical-lift bridge in Egypt is on the cards following the award of a contract by the General Authority for Roads and Bridges and Land Transport for the implementation of the project.

The contract was awarded to Hassan Allam Roads and Bridges, a subsidiary of Hassan Allam Holding, Egypt’s leading privately owned engineering, construction, and infrastructure companies operating on a stand-alone basis.

The bridge is set to be constructed within the Nile Barrage area, crossing the Nile River in Damietta Branch to connect the Qalyubiya and Menoufiya governorates through Qalyub, Menouf, and Tanta.

Composition of the first dual railway vertical-lift bridge in Egypt

The bridge is expected to be 1.35km long with a total of 16 onshore concrete panels, which consist of 17 axes that will utilize slab on piles system with a total length of 280m. The bridge also has three offshore structural steel panels with an overall length of 210m. The main intermediate offshore panel shall form the movable part of the bridge using the hydraulic vertical lifting mechanism.

In addition to the onshore and offshore panels, there is a third part of the first dual railway vertical-lift bridge in Egypt that will be constructed using the earthwork embankment method to connect the existing rail line to the bridge. The length of the embankment is approximately 839m.

According to Hassan Allam Steel Division, which will be fabricating the bridge’s steel structure, that project will require a total of approximately 2,200 tons of steel structure.
