Prof. Makame Mbarawa, Minister for Works and Transport, stated during the contract signing for the first phase of construction of the 36.3 km section from Kitulo to Inihio that the project will boost tourism and facilitate the movement of people and goods.

The China National Aero-technology International Engineering Corporation (AVIC-ENG) and the government signed the contract. Prof. Mbarawa stated that the road would ease the transportation of farm and forest products, and tourists, to Kitulo National Park.

He also said that the road will allow various industrial commodities from inside and outside the state to reach the area at reasonable prices. This will include cement, iron bars, fertilizers, and other items.

According to him, the road infrastructure would serve as a vital link between the Njombe and Mbeya regions. It will traverse through the Kikondo and Kitulo National Parks. Additionally, weighbridges will be built as part of the construction of the 36.3-km Kitulo-Iniho road.

Why the government opted to construct the Kitulo-Iniho road

According to him, the government chose to start with 36.3 km. This is because the area poses difficulties during the rainy seasons.

Prof. Mbarawa also directed TANROADS to supervise the construction of the road. The road is one of many road projects being funded by the government. Supervision is meant to ensure efficiency and value for money.

He also urged the residents of Njombe to work with the contractor. They were tasked to ensure the safety of building materials. This would ensure that the project is finished by the scheduled date.

Engineer Rogatus Mativila, Chief Executive Officer of TANROADS, stated that the road construction tender was announced in March 2022. Later, five bids were received and evaluated. The Chinese contractor, AVIC-ENG, was determined to be the winner at Tsh 69,754 billion (exclusive of VAT).
