On Monday, government officials from the National Housing Ministry inspected the Empumalanga West Housing project and voiced their disappointment with the RM Construction Company’s poor craftsmanship. The Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe (IDBZ) hired RM to develop water and sewage systems after the National Housing Ministry took over the Hwange Local Board (HLB) project.

Empumalanga West Housing Project’s Progress

HLB started the Empumalanga West low-cost residential housing project in 2014 to build low-cost dwellings for Hwange locals. The 2 145 residential lots were subsequently given to RM Construction to establish water and sewage facilities, while Asphalt Products took care of the road network. The ministry’s delegation voiced dismay over RM Construction’s poor craftsmanship during the trip, according to HLB sources.

According to a council source, early studies have revealed that the sewage lines will be unable to transfer waste, causing the system to be overwhelmed and causing sewer breaches in the region. They went on to say that the ministry team was dissatisfied with the work of the sewage contractor. Most of the work will have to be redone, and some of the bad work will certainly cause the project to be delayed. Because some stands were pegged in rivers, they became dysfunctional communities, the area’s pattern must be modified as well.

Silibaziso Chizwina, the Secretary for the National Housing Ministry, requested that any inquiries on the subject be sent in writing but has yet to answer as of the time of publication. Dumisani Nsingo, a spokesman for HLB, said the ministry had been advised that council engineers should be involved in the project to monitor the work. Nsingo went on to say that the council has now informed the government that their engineering department will be involved in the project to guarantee good craftsmanship.
