Expansion works of the Big 4 Rail Trail In Lebanon have begun with the removal of some of the trees along the sidewalks. East Superior Street, South Meridian Street, and South-East Street will be part of the planned 10-foot wide path extension. 

The expansion of the Big 4 Rail Trail in Lebanon will be extended to run from downtown Lebanon to Abner Longley Park. The trail will run down from the west side of South Meridian Street, taking a turn at East Superior Street and coming down to South East Street, and finally intersecting with the Abner Longley Park. The trail will then run through the park, making a connection to Hendricks Drive. The construction expansion is projected to be completed in either October or November.

Funding for the expansion of the big 4 rail-trail in Lebanon

The City of Lebanon’s website had a notice announcement of the expansion construction works through a letter in September 2021. The Deputy Director to Lebanon Parks and Recreation Department, Derek Warren, said that the city received funding for the Big 4 Rail Trail In Lebanon project via the state’s Next Level Trail grant system.

Warren revealed that the city made an application during the second round of the grant allocations where well over US$ 24M was being awarded for projects that were considered regionally significant. Warren explained that Lebanon pledged approximately US$ 1.4M for the project in the application. 

John Messenger, Director of Lebanon Parks, expressed that the expansion of the Big 4 Rail Trail In Lebanon throughout the town would contribute to increased accessibility, and more people would be able to make use of it more frequently. The hopes to increase transport accessibility throughout Lebanon were also expressed by the Deputy Director when he said that they hope and aim to attain total connectivity throughout the entire country.
