The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed that it plans to partner with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) towards the implementation of its electricity transmission projects in Lagos and Ogun states.

This was particularly revealed by the Federal Ministry of Power. According to the Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, the programme is aimed at expanding the power transmission network to support the rapidly expanding industries in Lagos and Ogun states.
The minister assured a delegation from JICA, when they visited him in his office, of President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to ensure that best practices were applied particularly to infrastructure development in the electricity supply industry in the West African country.
“Transmission is a major stake of government that is targeted at raising operational capacity to an appreciable level particularly at areas where industries are rapidly expanding. Consultancy services for line route studies, environmental and social impact assessment and environmental social management plan for the projects in Lagos and Ogun has been completed,” explained Mr. Aliyu.
Overview of the electricity transmission projects in Lagos and Ogun
The electricity transmission projects in Lagos and Ogun will be carried out by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) that manages the electricity transmission network in the West African country, through a loan of US$ 200M from JICA.
Upon completion, the projects will provide approximately 203 kilometers of high voltage transmission lines and six high voltage substations to cover five Local Government Areas, LGAs, in Ogun and one LGAs in Lagos state.
According to Mr. Aliyu the project will cover appropriately 200 communities.
The loan provision progress
According to Sasaki Taigo, the Senior Representative JICA, Nigeria office, the loan agreement is expected to be signed in March.
Earlier, Mr. Taigo who was the team leader of the delegation that visited Aliyu’s office, said that their mission was to confirm the content of the loan agreement, and to confirm the Memorandum of Understanding on the electricity transmission projects in Lagos and Ogun with relevant Ministries and implementation agencies among others.
