Helsinki-based Anora plans for a distillery revamp project with a new biomass boiler at its Koskenkorva distillery in Finland. The project for the Nordic wine and spirits brand house is set to foster its position as a sustainability leader in its sector. Anora’s new biomass boiler at its Koskenkorva distillery in Finland will allow for the full transition to renewable fuels. This will be from fossil fuels with a burdensome carbon footprint. Anora expects full operations at the revamped distillery by end of 2026.

Why a revamp project at the Koskenkorva distillery

Currently, Anora’s Koskenkorva distillery runs on a fossil fuel-fired steam boiler that has apparently reached its maximum functional lifespan. This necessitates the replacement project.

The distillery is paramount to Anora’s operations. It serves Anora’s Scope 1 and 2, and a shift towards sustainability and carbon neutrality by end 2026 is a just as important for the Nordic wines and spirits company. Also indicated by Anora in the need for the new biomass boiler at its Koskenkorva distillery in Finland is the improved safety and automation in the new industrial setup. Alongside this is the operational reliability expected from the revamped distillery.

The untagged project investment has been termed as the “final step in making the Koskenkorva Distillery’s operations carbon neutral”. This is also a move to set a “new industry standard and showcasing our [Anova’s] dedication to environmental responsibility” – to other industry players, according to Hannu Vähämurto. Hannu is the SVP of Anora’s Industrial segment.

Anora’s Koskenkorva distillery in Finland in foresight

Anora’s plans for a new biomass boiler at its Koskenkorva distillery in Finland is indeed the final step in its carbon neutrality strategy. This is because by 2030, all operations for the Nordic based wine and spirits brand house will be carbon neutral, without compensations.

The company also recently aced in the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This is after receiving green-light for its science-based emission reduction targets.
