Plans for the development of a massive  Hill Country Film Studio project, estimated at $267 million were recently revealed by the Hill Country Group for the city of San Marcos, Texas.  The giant multi-use studio, which is positioned at the entry point to the La Cima community, is intended to be the largest and first of its kind in Central Texas.

The development site for the Hill Country Film Studio project will be a 209-acre plot, located on the west side of I-35 in La Cima, somewhere between San Antonio and Austin. This three-phased project is scheduled to commence construction by early 2023 and its delivery date is set for August 2025.

Foley Design will serve as the architect for the project.

Scope and expectations for the Hill Country Film Studio project

The Hill Country Film Studio project involves building an 820,000 sq ft film and virtual production facility, with enough room to house 12 sound-proofed stages, occupying up to 310,000 square feet of space; 4 workshops with some modular offices totalling 310,000 square feet; and 2 back lots for outdoor production, spanning across 15-acres.

In addition, the project will also feature a screening theatre with a seating capacity of 50, post-production facilities, and a 25-acre portion, which has been set aside to develop vendor and commercial components, to serve the studio and surrounding community as well. 

According to Hill Country, the project is expected to provide up to 22 full-time employment opportunities, with a $100,000 average salary and offer 1,400 construction jobs. Tax incentives have also been granted by the San Marcos City Council to support the construction.

Comments on the project

Joe Pantalion, San Marco’s Assistant Manager praised the developers of the Hill Country Film Studio project for making the decision to invest in the city. Pantalion also said he was certain the new studio facility would spur growth in San Marco’s local businesses and its economy as a whole.

Hill Country Studios’ co-founder and CEO, Cory McLoud, also said the Hill Country Film Studio project, which initially began as a dream to raise the standard of the production industry in Texas, is now coming to pass. He added that this project would place the film industry at the central point of the innovation corridor in Texas.
