After a lengthy wait for appropriate shelter, some local residents of Lambert’s Bay were given keys to their new homes as an early Christmas present under the Integrated Residential Development Programme (IRDP). After 184 dwellings were delivered during phase 1, the handover is part of phase 2 of this Integrated Residential Development Programme. Phase 2 is expected to provide 86 dwelling units. The Cederberg Municipality asked that the projected 100 units for the 2021/22 financial year be decreased owing to insufficient bulk capacity in the region.

The elderly, those with medically documented disabilities, persons who have been on the Housing Demand Database (HDD) for 15 years or more, back-yard residents, and military veterans in Lambert’s Bay are all served by this programme. According to the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements, the multi-year project began in 2016 and is expected to be completed in 2022. The remaining 41 residences will be given over before the conclusion of the fiscal year 2021/22.
Sharing in the delight of the project’s beneficiaries, according to MEC for Human Settlements Tertuis Simmers, will always be invaluable because the transformation that is occurring cannot be quantified. He went on to say that the handover happened a few days before Reconciliation Day since the department’s mission was to reconcile its inhabitants with their dignity, make them feel safer, and ensure they lived in better conditions.
According to the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements, several projects are in the development or building stages around the province as part of the Integrated Residential Development Programme. The department handed up 362 sites and 184 top buildings in phase one. It will provide 84 units in the second phase. The first 45 of the 84 units were delivered. In an open-opportunity society, Simmers continued, the Western Cape government was dedicated to expediting human settlement delivery while promoting social inclusion by creating integrated, resilient, safe, and sustainable human settlements.
