Lawmakers push for faster completion of Isiolo International Airport

Senators are calling on the government to urgently complete Isiolo International Airport, a key project that has stalled for years, slowing down economic development in Northern, Upper Eastern, and Central Kenya. They say delays are hurting trade, tourism, and investment opportunities for the region.

Isiolo International Airport: Project Factsheet

  • Location: Isiolo County, Kenya

  • Start date: Construction began in 2011

  • Initial budget: Sh2.97 billion

  • Additional required funds: Sh4.8 billion

  • Runway length: 1.4 kilometres

  • Part of: LAPSSET Corridor (Lamu Port–South Sudan–Ethiopia Transport)

  • Planned facilities: Modern terminal building, control tower, cargo handling units

Senators demand answers on delays and spending

Despite being launched in 2011 and opened for use in 2017, Isiolo International Airport has never fully operated as expected. The airport was meant to support cargo and passenger flights, especially serving the growing demand in Northern Kenya and neighbouring countries.

So far, it has failed to attract major airlines due to incomplete works, poor runway conditions, and lack of supporting infrastructure.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir told the Senate that the airport has serious runway defects. The black cotton soil and flooding in the area have led to cracks and weakened sections, making it unsafe for larger planes.

The current runway classification is too low for international operations. Chirchir said repairs are urgent to prevent further damage, reduce future costs, and ensure long-term use.

We need Sh4.8 billion to raise the airport to international standards. This includes extending the runway, building a modern terminal, and installing proper drainage.

Economic importance of Isiolo International Airport

When complete, Isiolo International Airport is expected to become a gateway for trade and tourism in Northern Kenya. The airport will help farmers and traders export fresh produce like miraa, meat, flowers, and vegetables faster, especially to markets in Ethiopia and the Middle East.

It will also boost tourism by improving access to destinations like Samburu, Meru National Park, and parts of Marsabit. Chirchir said:

The airport will help open up the LAPSSET corridor, linking Kenya to South Sudan, Ethiopia, and beyond. It’s not just for Isiolo. This is a strategic project for the whole country.

Lawmakers demand transparency on funds and land issues

Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo asked for a clear breakdown of the money spent so far. She also wanted to know when landowners displaced by the project will receive their full compensation.

Can the Cabinet Secretary tell us the amount already allocated and how much has been used? Also, what is the status of compensating landowners? Many are still waiting.

Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi said the current Sh4.8 billion budget is not enough, given the size and ambition of the project.

Even extending the runway alone costs Sh1.5 billion. We need to fix these issues once and for all.

The government says it is committed to completing the airport as part of the larger LAPSSET corridor. Once complete, Isiolo International Airport is expected to attract investors, ease transport of goods, and create new jobs across multiple counties.
