Updated April 22, 2026 – Lumsden Point project at Port Hedland in Western Australia has recently entered a more advanced construction phase, with enabling infrastructure now largely in place and civil works almost reaching operational readiness. As of April 2026, the project has hit a major milestone with the completion of a new Great Northern Highway Lumsden Interchange, a four-way road system featuring flyover bridges, an underpass, and dedicated access ramps designed to safely handle oversize vehicles serving the port precinct. The interchange is located at the junction of Pinga Street, Lumsden access road, and the Great Northern Highway which serves as a primary inland corridor to the Kimberley region and Pilbara mining zones.

This upgrade is also an important gateway into the multi-user facility and is intended to support efficient movement of critical minerals exports and renewable energy imports such as wind turbine components. The project is also increasingly defined by its role in enabling diversified trade flows. Lumsden Point Port Expansion Project in Australia Underway

Reported February 28, 2023 – The Lumsden point port expansion project in Australia strives to increase the port’s capacity to export battery metals. These include copper concentrates and lithium. The contract for the project was awarded to MGN Civil. The marine civil contractor specializes in the construction of sea walls alongside ground improvement, land reclamation, and wick drain installation. Right in the Port of Port Hedland, the project will deliver new multi-user facilities and berths. Lumsden Point Port Expansion Project in Australia to Deliver Lasting Infrastructure

A total of $565 million will be invested into the project by the Federal Government. On the other hand, the Western Australian Government will contribute $96.5 million. The first stage of the Lumsden point port expansion project in Australia will feature the construction of two sea walls.
