Young people labouring to repair impassable portions on the Rumphi-Hewe road in Rumphi district have appealed to the first lady, Monica Chakwera, to intervene in their cause. The road, which is already in a poor state, becomes more inaccessible during the rainy season, according to young individuals trading under the name ‘Friends of Rumphi West.’

According to the teenagers, they have decided to seek aid from the First Lady in order to persuade her husband to fulfil the road pledge made during the campaign. The First Lady is said to be a local who grew up in the neighbourhood. The team leader, Godfrey Chawinga, indicated that the first woman would empathize more since she is more aware of the challenges that the villagers face in the region than anybody else. As a result, he stated that they expected that she would respond positively to their cause.

Efforts to See the Rumphi-Hewe Road Complete

Chawinga stated that a study of the route revealed that regions such as Chankhalamu, Bembe, and Jeka might make the road unusable if it rains. Rumphi-Hewe road is part of the Rumphi-Nyika road, which was put on hold a few years ago owing to financing issues, according to various sources. The youngsters, who have pooled their money, have also appealed to Army General Vincent Nundwe and Prophet Shepherd Bushiri to help them in repairing some of the road’s most challenging sections.

Mwazisi and Hewe, for example, are agriculturally productive locations in Rumphi West. Last year, poor road conditions hampered the delivery of economic supplies to farmers in the area. Yona Adada Wiza Mkandawire, the Member of Parliament for the area, was not immediately available for comment on the matter, but he was recently in the news after a spat with Rumphi District Commissioner, Fred Moveti, over the management of the Constituency Department Fund (CDF), which helps to renovate roads among other things.
