The groundbreaking of Medical West Hospital Authority’s new McCalla Healthcare facility in Birmingham took place recently on a 46-acre site located at 4501 Bell Hill Road in McCalla. This project has been in the works for several years and it started in 2017, with Medical West engaging Cushman & Wakefield/EGS Commercial and Real Estate of Birmingham for the site selection.

New McCalla Healthcare facility to replace Medical West’s current hospital in Bessemer

The new McCalla Healthcare facility in Birmingham is expected to open in 2024 and will replace the current Medical West Hospital Authority hospital in Bessemer, which was built in 1964. This $400 million project will cover the development of a 9-story, 412,000 square-foot building with 200 beds and a 127,000 square-foot, 5-story medical office building. Provision will also be made for state-of-the-art healthcare amenities which include a new surgical and endoscopy suite, as well as the latest imaging technology and more intensive care beds.

Throughout the three year design and construction period of the new McCalla Healthcare facility in Birmingham, the existing hospital in Bessemer will continue providing healthcare services. But upon completion, the new hospital will offer all the services currently available at the existing hospital in Bessemer and much more. According to officials, this new healthcare facility is a necessity to enable them to continue providing adequate healthcare services to southwest Jefferson County. They also noted that this new development will not affect the operations of the Primary care clinics in Bessemer, Hueytown, Vance, Tannehill, Hoover and Parkwest, along with the freestanding emergency department on Highway 150 will also not be impacted.

Companies involved in the development of McCalla Healthcare facility in Birmingham include the CBRE, serving as the project manager; Brasfield & Gorrie, as general contractor; Bhate Geosciences and Building & Earth, working as site engineers; and HKS and KPS, as architects. Majority of the funding for the new McCalla healthcare facility will be covered by a grant from the USDA, but financial assistance will also be provided by  Concourse, Thornton Farrish, PNC Bank, Raymond James, GNC and Maynard, Cooper and Gale.

CEO Keith Pennington spoke on how this new McCalla Healthcare facility would facilitate the company’s future growth plans and he also said that his company was excited to work with such an exceptional team of firms, to achieve their goal of bringing this new state-of-the-art hospital to the residents of West Jefferson County.
