The Julius Nyerere hydropower plant nears completion as eight of its nine turbines have been installed. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr Doto Biteko noted these insights to the Parliament. He provided the update during a debate on a resolution to commend President Samia Suluhu for hosting the 2025 Africa Energy Summit. Furthermore, he noted that Tanzania’s electrification efforts have attracted global interest. The hydropower plant is one that has been highly anticipated as it edges completion. Costing sh.6.6 trillion, the Julius Nyerere hydropower plant is expected to generate over 2GW of electricity once completed. This will be a significant boost, considering Tanzania’s total electricity production stands at 3.4 GW. Dr Biteko emphasized that the Ministry of Energy is committed to ensuring practical implementation of the summit. Moreover, he stressed that no plans will be left unimplemented.

The Significance of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant in Tanzania
Once fully implemented, the Julius Nyerere hydropower plant is expected to have immense significance in Tanzania. The project aims to address the power outages and frequent blackouts that many residents experience. Moreover, it aligns with the government’s ambition to increase clean energy production. Dr. Biteko noted that the government plans to increase service access to clean energy from 6.9 percent to 75 percent. Moreover, renewable energy is expected to rise from its current 56 percent to 65 percent. Meanwhile, others assert that the ministry should redirect funds initially allocated for electricity projects to other development initiatives.

With the hydropower operational, this will be made possible as it will almost double Tanzania’s current output. The reallocated resources will benefit many residents, with Tanzania having various projects that are being implemented. The hydropower plant and dam will also regulate the flow of River Rufiji, which will benefit many. Apart from producing electricity, its extensive reservoir capacity will allow for water storage and its controlled release. This will reduce the risk of sudden flood events to communities residing downstream.
