A renowned producer of data storage hardware and computer memory, Micron Technology Inc. Is building its new Atlanta Design Center which will bring about 500 jobs to the area. 

The Atlanta Design Center will occupy 93,000 square feet of space and will be located in Midtown, which is the Technology Square Innovation District, developed by the Georgia Institute of Technology. The area is known for bringing University, startup and corporate resources together, and has drawn thousands of technology jobs in the previous year. Although the precise location in Midtown is yet to be announced, there are speculations pointing towards the space at 712 West Peachtree tower in Midtown.

Development plans for Micron’s Atlanta Design Center will include a data center, an area built for research and development activities and some offices. The new center will be opening for business by January 2022, and Micron is already making plans to form a collaboration with  various institutions within the region including Georgia Tech, University of Georgia, Emory University, Morehouse College and Spelman College. 

According to the Executive Vice President of technology and products at Micron, Scott DeBoer, the company is planning to use its new Atlanta Design Center to develop and research new technologies,  which will enable them to leverage on novelty innovations in areas such as artificial intelligence, 5G and autonomous vehicles.  Micron also plans on increasing  world demand for memory and storage; which will create several jobs in the industry, cutting across computer hardware personnel, electrical and electronic engineering personnel, modeling and simulation development as well as business support roles. 

Brian Kemp, the governor of Georgia spoke in support of Micron’s new Atlanta Design Center project in Georgia.  Governor Kemp said he was  eager to witness the opportunities and innovative solutions which would be generated from the development of this world-class technology center. Kemo also said he was glad that Micron had made the decision to move into one of the number one states for business, where they would have access to all the resources needed to succeed and contribute to the state’s thriving economy.

The President of Georgia Tech, Angel Cabrera expressed his excitement over Micron’s decision to set up its Atlanta Design Center in Midtown. Cabrera said he was certain that the strong community of students, researchers, and start-ups in the Technology Square Innovation District would add great value to their projects and improve their overall talent and innovation goals. He also added,  “We look forward to expanding our collaboration with Micron and welcome them to the neighborhood.”
