The completed tasks include surface dressing, road marking, and installing street lighting. Other tasks include bus bays in designated areas, access culverts, footbridges, better access roads, and junctions. In addition, speed control measures are still being implemented.

Nairobi Eastern Bypass Highway Dualisation Project Begins

The dualization works of the Nairobi Eastern Bypass Highway, which starts at the junction of the Nairobi–Mombasa Road and Airport North Road, in Embakasi, passing through Pipeline, Utawala, Ruai, and Ruiru, underneath the Thika Superhighway to the Ruiru Kamiti Road where it culminates at a distance of 28-kilometers, have begun.

Reportedly, the contractor, China Communication Construction Company (CCCC), has already moved to the site and has already started construction work along the northern edges of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport towards Utawala in Embakasi.

Development of the Nairobi Eastern Bypass Highway Dualisation Project

Valued at slightly over US$ 111M, the Nairobi Eastern Bypass Highway Dualisation Project was announced back in 2017 by the then Ministry of Transport Cabinet Secretary Macharia Kamau but it took time to commence as the government sought funds. In September 2021 the East African country’s government signed a close to US$ 18M loan agreement with an undisclosed financier for the implementation of the project.

Noteworthy, the project is among 11 projects that Kenya showcased to global investors during the Belt and Road forum held in Beijing, China, back in May 2017. Other projects were the expansion of the Southern and Northern bypasses.

The Southern Bypass, which starts at the junction of Nairobi-Mombasa Road and Likoni Road, through the Nairobi National Park to Kiambu County, allows traffic from Mombasa, destined for western Kenya and Uganda to bypass downtown Nairobi, thereby reducing traffic congestion in the city’s central business district.

The Northern Bypass on the other hand starts from the Ruaka trading center on Limuru Road, overpassing Banana Road through Runda and Thome estates. The 31-km bypass then proceeds to Kahawa West and eventually to Ruiru, through Kamae, where it joins the Eastern Bypass.

Expectations for the future dual carriage Nairobi Eastern Bypass Highway

Upon completion, the dual carriage Nairobi Eastern Bypass Highway is mainly expected to ease traffic congestion on the key road that links motorists from the busy Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Mombasa-Nairobi highway to Thika Superhighway, bypassing the congested central business district.
