The foundation stone has been laid for the start of the construction of “My Heart Centre” in Kigali, Rwanda, in a ceremony graced by Mrs. Jeannette Kagame, the first lady of the East African Republic.

The ceremony was also attended by Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, an Egyptian-British retired professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Imperial College London and the founder of Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Foundation, Eng. Samih Sawiris, the executive chairman of the board of directors and CEO of Orascom Development Holding, and other Rwandan and Egyptian dignitaries.

Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Foundation is one of the partners behind the project while Orascom Construction is the project’s contractor.

About “My Heart Centre” in Kigali

Set for construction in phases, the future facility will feature a research wing, clinics, operation theatres, radiology rooms, laboratories, pharmacies, accommodation, and an administration block.

Speaking on the project last year, Gisele Gatariki, the chairperson of Heart Care Research Foundation Rwanda (HCRF-R) said that it (“My Heart Centre” in Kigali) will give all medical care to people with heart conditions, including surgeries, especially to the people who would ordinarily not afford it.

Dr. Evariste Ntaganda, the director of cardiovascular diseases at Rwanda Biomedical Centre, on the other hand, said that the facility will train more professional cardiologists, especially in the pediatric field, and help in emergencies and intensive care cases.

Working on projects that have a positive impact on local communities

In a statement released after the groundbreaking of the project for the construction of the “My Heart Centre” in Kigali, Rwanda, Orascom Construction noted that it strives to work on projects that have a direct positive impact on the local communities.

“We are proud to be associated with this important project, which strengthens our involvement in such important causes, and particularly with the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation,” read the statement in part.

Rwanda is set to be home to a my heart research center that is planned for construction in Masaka, Kicukiro District, Kigali, courtesy of Heart Care Research Foundation Rwanda (HCRF-R).

The construction works, facilitated by the recent signing of an agreement between the East African country’s Health minister Dr. Daniel Ngamije and the Egyptian ambassador to Rwanda, Ahmed Samy Mohamed El-Ansary, will start before the end of this year

According to Gisele Gatariki, the chairperson of HCRF-R, construction works for the first phase of the project, which is backed by the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD), are expected to last for 18 months after which equipment will be installed.

The project, whose cost has not been revealed, will be subsidized through funds raised in the form of grants from partners such as Chain of Hope, Magdi Yacoub Foundation, Sawaris Foundation, and other philanthropy organizations.

Features of the future facility

The future facility, managed by HCRF-R, will feature a research wing, clinics, operation theatres, radiology rooms, laboratories, pharmacies, accommodation, and an administration block.

The chairperson of HCRF-R said that “the cardiovascular center will give all medical care to people with heart conditions, including surgeries, especially to the people who would ordinarily not afford it,”

“We expect the facility to be fully operational in 2-3 years. It will start with a capacity of about 1,000 people,” she added

On the other hand, Dr. Evariste Ntaganda, the director of cardiovascular diseases at Rwanda Biomedical Centre, said that the proposed facility will train more professional cardiologists, especially in the pediatric field, and help in emergencies and intensive care cases.

In his remarks Amb. El-Ansary said that Egypt is committed to partner with Rwanda in improving quality health care in the East African country, adding that the proposed cardiovascular facility was conceived in the same context.
