A $550m Tampa General Hospital expansion plan is underway and it is seen as the”largest master facility plan” in the hospital’s history. This master facility plan will help Tampa General Hospital meet the increasing healthcare needs and requirements of the Tampa Bay region and also provide over 5,952 jobs.
The Tampa General Hospital expansion plan, which was kick-started sometime in June, began with the launching of a $17.5m intensive care unit (ICU) project for Tampa General Hospital. The ICU unit which is now open, has added 34 ICU rooms to the hospital and also features new patient rooms, equipped with advanced health care technologies.

Tampa General Hospital’s expansion plan is inclusive of several renovations and construction projects; some of their renovation projects include: the renovation and expansion of the Regional Burn Center, which is now underway and its new design is expected to be complete in May 2022; and also the renovation project for the main operating room suite, which involves renovating the operating rooms and also upgrading equipment.
The construction projects in Tampa General Hospital’s expansion plan include: the Bayshore Pavilion vertical expansion, which involves raising the Tampa General’s Bayshore Pavilion building by an additional 4 floors, providing 12 new operating rooms and 100 new beds; the construction of a Freestanding emergency department which will be located one mile from the hospital’s main campus; construction of an eight-story, parking garage with a capacity of 2,000 spots at the TGH Corporate Center; the development of a new clinic space for multidisciplinary integrated oncology services; a central energy plant expansion to enhance power generation capabilities; and the construction of an Off-site sterile processing facility which will take sterile processing activities off the hospital campus.
According to the hospital officials, Tampa General Hospital’s expansion projects will run from now through 2026 and their plans for the hospital also include the renovation of the main lobby of the hospital’s main campus. The Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Tampa General Hospital, Kelly Cullen was impressed by the progress made so far on hospital’s master facility plan. Cullen said, “This $550 million capital commitment allows us to invest in innovation and supports the creation of tomorrow’s TGH. We are truly building into the future.”
