Phase one of the Ruwais general utility plant waste heat recovery project in Abu Dhabi is reportedly edging closer to completion. The US$ 600M project is located within the General Utilities Plant in Ruwais. It is a result of a joint venture company between OMV, Eni, and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc).
The implementation of the waste heat recovery project in Abu Dhabi began back in 2018. The construction of first phase of the project was expected to be completed before the end of the year.
When fully complete, the facility will recycle waste heat that is generated by the general utility plant in Ruwais. It will produce well up to 230 megawatts (MW) of electricity within a day. Additionally, the facility will also produce a total of 62,400 cubic meters of distilled water in a day.Â

Scope and expectation for the waste heat recovery project in Abu Dhabi
Phase one of the waste heat recovery project in Abu Dhabi will feature the operation of two new boilers and turbines. The second phase, on the other hand, will include a double-up of another two new boilers and turbines.
Furthermore and without any additional carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, the waste heat recovery project in Abu Dhabi will contribute towards an increase in the plant’s power production as well as thermal efficiency by approximately 30%.
The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company is best known for its production of one of the world’s least-carbon-intensive crude. Its activities align with the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. The waste heat recovery project in Abu Dhabi is thus one of the multiple strategic initiatives toward decarbonization as the company aims to uphold a heritage of responsible environmental stewardship.
The project will further contribute toward a significant reduction in the firm’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity by 25%. This will better propel Adnoc as well as Abu Dhabi towards the actualization of their environmental goals, standards, and vision.
