Plans are in the pipeline for the construction of of a new seafood canning and processing plant at Duqm Special Economic Zone in Al Wusta Governorate. This was revealed by Fisheries Development Oman (“FDO”). The latter is a Joint-stock company and a subsidiary of Oman Investment Authority, a wholly government owned sovereign wealth fund.

An overview of the development

The project’s commencement of construction work was officially announced by Fisheries Development Oman. The plant is worth well about OMR 24 million.

The OMR 24 million seafood canning and processing plant at Duqm Special Economic Zone is set to occupy a total area of 85,000 meters. Reportedly, the project’s design adheres to the latest quality, specifications as well as food safety standards.

The development, also referred to as the ‘tuna canning project’, aims to increase the rate of the localization of the fish product value chain. Thereafter, several Omani SMEs would avail and involve themselves more within the industry. As a result, the GDP would then experience progressive improvement.

Moreover, the project serves as a compliment to the efforts and output of the Tanfeedh Programme. The latter is well in alignment with the Oman Vision 2040. It will promote the region’s vision of economic maximization.

Remarks on the seafood canning and processing plant at Duqm Special Economic Zone

The General Manager of the International Sea Food company gave further insight into the project. Engineer Ali Nasser Al-Rasbi Phase 1 of the seafood canning and processing plant at Duqm Special Economic Zone aims to achieve a capacity of 100 million cans per year. He also noted that the International Sea Food company is a subsidiary of Fisheries Development Oman. Therefore, it will be the industrial manufacturing arm of the group.

The General Manager also revealed that the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones signed a land usufruct agreement. The agreement was signed with the International Sea Food company for the construction of seafood, tuna, and sardine canning plant.
