Prisma Health is set to launch a major $350 million expansion at its Greer Memorial Hospital campus, aiming to significantly boost inpatient capacity and enhance outpatient services. Preparatory work at the site is scheduled to begin this fall.
This ambitious project is Prisma Health’s largest investment in the Upstate area in almost two decades. Upon completion, the expansion will increase the licensed bed capacity of the hospital from 82 to 175 and provide new clinical services responsive to a growing community.
Expanded Services and New Facilities
The $250 million hospital addition will rise in stages and is to be completed by early 2028. Framing the centerpiece are new 110,000-square-foot, three-story tower and a companion building next to the existing one. This will allow for a significant expansion of capacity in several of its most important departments—such as emergency services, surgical services, labor and delivery, and intensive care.
In addition, Prisma Health will introduce new specialty units in cardiovascular and pediatrics to address more specialized healthcare requirements.
To the hospital upgrades will be added a $100 million medical office building, which will start construction in the first half of 2026. Across the street from the main hospital on South Buncombe Road, the three-story, 100,000-square-foot outpatient center will house a range of primary and specialty care practices. They include expanded cardiology, pulmonology, neurology, urology, and new ear, nose, and throat (ENT) practice. Additional pediatric specialty services are in the works as well.
The outpatient center will welcome its first patients in mid-2027.

Addressing Regional Need
The expansion is Prisma Health’s response to a surge in demand for services in the Greer community, one of South Carolina’s most rapidly growing communities.
“This investment is a significant leap forward in our efforts to reimagine the delivery of healthcare,” said Sen. Mark O’Halla, Prisma Health President and CEO. “It’s about reaching further and going out to where our communities are with the care they need.”
The final go-ahead was obtained in June, when the South Carolina Department of Public Health issued a Certificate of Need for the hospital expansion.
Todd Walker, CEO of Greer Memorial Hospital, emphasized the project’s long-term significance. “This expansion will redefine our ability to serve the people of Greer,” he said. “We’re growing with our community—improving care, expanding services, and ensuring our patients have access to the highest quality experience.”
