Queen’s Health System has released its master plan for a new hospital in Kailua-Kona which is set to revolutionize health care on the Island. The new 80-bed facility will include an emergency department and will offer advanced medical care.
Queen’s Health Systems has recently made known its planned change which aims at improving the health care systems in Hawaii Island and hence develop advanced health care facilities in the West and North Hawaii. The current strategic plan is the overall consolidation that incorporates two major capital developments to meet the current healthcare needs of the surrounding communities.
In Kailua-Kona, Queen’s will construct a new hospital of the future which will include an 80-bed facility, an emergency department, an ambulatory care center and a helipad for moving patients between the islands. The facility will be built in the West Hawaii Business Park and will be easily accessible to meet the health care needs of the area.
Jason Chang, The Chief Executive Officer of Queen’s Health Systems explained the purpose of the project: the provision of “care close to home.” The development seeks to address healthcare problems in the hard to reach and distant areas through the application of technology, sustainability as well as the community approach.
Other Developments: North Hawaii Community Hospital
Along with the new hospital in Kailua-Kona, Queen’s has proposed the development of North Hawaii Community Hospital to include a new outpatient and specialty care center of 40, 000 square feet. The destination Cancer Center will be a highlight of this facility and will offer the following services; Radiation Oncology, Infusion Therapy, Oncology Surgery, Precision Medicine and Genomics.
The expansion does not stop at these primary structures. Queen’s Concepts includes the provision of other healthcare services in Kona such as Skilled Nursing, Post-Acute Care and Urgent Care Facilities. The system also looks at creating a Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Center which may bring patients from all over the Pacific Rim and make Kona as the destination for rehabilitation.
The project is a monumental change in the healthcare delivery system within the region; it will help in the reduction of off-island medical trips and offer a complete range of quality health care within the community.
Pacific Business News reported that the cost of the new hospital is estimated to be between $400M and $500M.
