Milestone Infrastructure and Dyer & Butler, sister companies, are working together on the third and last package of Hampshire County Council‘s plan to renovate Southampton’s Redbridge Causeway. The £25 million renovation is anticipated to extend the Redbridge Causeway’s lifespan by 60 years, with an average of 60,000 vehicles using it each day.

Milestone Infrastructure will fix the causeway’s faulty concrete. Later, an impressed current cathodic protection system (ICCP) will be constructed to guard against damage from tidal and saltwater erosion. Milestone Infrastructure will receive engineering assurance help from Dyer & Butler to make sure Network Rail safety standards are maintained where construction would affect the flyover above the railway.

Atkins is the project’s consulting engineer. It entails the development of three eastbound bridge structures that cross the River Test’s two channels (part of SNC-Lavalin). On the bridge, Milestone Infrastructure will upgrade a segment for a future bike path and build a new waterproofing system.

The project has been developed in cooperation with the Marine Management Organization and the Environment Agency. Thus, it will ensure the protection of the threatened ecosystems that are around the Redbridge Causeway site.

“The team approach on the Redbridge Causeway project highlights the collaborative behaviors of Milestone Infrastructure with integrated teams collaborating to de-risk and accomplish this complex project,” said Sean Murphy, director of contracts at Milestone Infrastructure. “We have reduced costs for our customers through improved early contractor engagement (ECI). Furthermore, we have developed creative methods and processes that have accelerated the construction phase.”

Redbridge Causeway has four concrete bridges and provides important access to Southampton’s port and city from the west. It carries commuters and freight over the River Test as well as the railway line linking Southampton with Romsey. Thus, for bikers and walkers, it is the sole direct way to cross the River Test.
