Construction has started in order to prepare for the more than £100 million redevelopment of the railway station in Darlington. Local construction company Thompsons has started work on a “soft strip” of properties to the east of the station. This is where all non-structural interior and exterior elements, as well as any residual contents, will be removed and the utilities will be disconnected. The area is currently planned to be an addition to the station. Furthermore, it will have a bridge connecting the old and new locations.

A multi-story parking garage, a transportation interchange, and a gateway entrance leading to Central Park are all part of the redevelopment of the railway station in Darlington. After the soft strip, heavy demolition will begin on September 1 as Darlington Council takes possession of other homes in order to kick off the new build later that year.

In order to make the station easier to access and provide excellent interchange facilities with other modes of transportation, improvements are also planned for the Victoria Road entrance and the car park pick-up and drop-off points on the western side of the station. New road layouts, wider pavements, and improved walking and cycling access are also being considered.

Additionally, the new Darlington Economic Campus and the new development will further connect the station with the possibilities at Central Park. The next stage of the project will start in a few days, not months. This is when work to clear the area and get it ready for reconstruction gets going.
