New images have been released showing the progress on the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. The project, spanning 73-acres, is under construction to support the development of the Empire Wind 1 offshore wind farm. Construction broke ground in June last year during a ceremony that had New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10), NYSERDA President and Equinor CEO Doreen Harris present. New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and Sustainable South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SSBMT) are working together to develop the project. Furthermore, Equinor, a Norwegian company, has been contracted for the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal construction.

Details on the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal
The project is located between Sunset Park and Greenwood Heights. The US$861 million project is going to serve as the staging and assembly site for the wind farm’s turbine components. Additionally, it will feature a substation to connect the wind power to the city’s grid. The most recent images show an array of steel pilings clustered by the southwest corner of the site. Moreover, there is a multi storey steel-framed superstructure going up on the opposite eastern end. There are also excavators and other machinery working across other areas of the developments between 29th and 39th Streets on the western side of 2nd Avenue.

The Empire Wind 1 project is also being developed in collaboration with bp, a UK-based company and will be the first offshore wind farm that will connect directly to the New York City power grid. The entire wind power project will have a total of 54 turbines and will provide power to half a million homes in the state. Once completed, it will be capable of transferring 810 megawatts to the Gowanus substation.
