The Prime Minister of Egypt, Mostafa Madbouly, witnessed the signing of an agreement between Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy that would foresee the construction of a 500MW Gulf of Suez Wind Power Project. The signing ceremony was held on Wednesday and was also attended by the country’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Essmat.

The agreement of the wind power plant project was signed by the chairperson of EETC Mona Rizk. It was also signed by CEO of Siemens Gamesa Egypt Ayman Saad. This project is in line with the energy strategy of Egypt, emphasizing the commitment of the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy to increasing the role of renewable energy in the overall national energy mix. Furthermore, it also strengthens the public-private partnerships. This therefore encourages the private sector to participate in the development of both solar and wind projects in the country.

What has Siemens Gamesa been Tasked with in the 500MW Gulf of Suez Wind Power Project Development?

In the agreement that was signed, Siemens Gamesa has been tasked with the construction, financing, and operation works of the wind power plant. The wind project is expected to increase significantly the share of renewable energy in the overall electricity supply of Egypt. This will therefore support the ambitious clean energy targets the country has set.

Egypt has an aim of generating 42% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and 65% by 2040. This initiative that the country has set will help in cutting the reliance of fossil fuels. Additionally, it will also cut carbon emissions and generally promote the sustainable energy solutions of Egypt.

The Wind Project a Part of Egypt’s Strategy to Enhance the Renewable Energy Sector

According to Minister Mahmoud Essmat, this wind project is a key component of the strategy of the government to enhance the country’s renewable energy sector. The strategy entails utilisation of natural resources, and also mitigate the environmental impact.
