The Federal Republic of Somalia will soon have a new international airport in the coming five years following the launch of Haawaay Airport Project. The country’s president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud made this announcement while noting that faster expansion of infrastructure will be crucial in reviving the economy of the country.

The upcoming airport is expected to decongest Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu. It will be built Haawaay, Middle Shabelle. Furthermore, it will be vital in strengthening connectivity while expanding economic growth within the country.

Location: Haawaay which is also referred to as Warsheekh district, Middle Shabelle region.

Timeline:

  • Construction officially launched on Sunday, June 29, 2025 (groundbreaking ceremony).
  • Expected completion within five years.

Within the next five years, the $800 million airport project will be completed. Other than the airport, the country also plans to construct a new Seaport, modern road networks, healthcare amenities, and lastly the first-ever space centre in Horn of Africa.

Significance of the Project

“This airport project is the gateway to Somalia’s future. It is not only about travel, but also about generally transforming the economy, jobs creation, and enhancing our national capabilities,” President Mohamud stated at the ceremony that was attended by the regional and federal government officials.

“The new airport project is expected to provide modern facilities that meet the international standards. This will therefore make Mogadishu a key hub in the East Africa region,” the President added.

The airport project was announced in late 2024. Furthermore, it is a flagship project of the administration of Mohamud which has prioritized infrastructure as a catalyst for post-conflict recovery and nation-building.

Similar Projects in the Region

The plans for the airport project coincide with the recent attempts of Kenya to renovate the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Also, both Rwanda and Ethiopia are constructing modern airports to accommodate the local and international demands.
